It's because the majority of your blood gets diverted to the digestive system where your stomach etc. begin to work. This diversion of blood lowers the amount of oxygen available to other parts of the body giving you that "tired" feeling.

This is also why it's not good to eat HUGE meals as they will make you lethargic and you'll end up vegging out.

There is no link between sleeping in the day and headaches....Thousands and thousands of people sleep during the day without getting them. If you yourself get headaches after having a nap in the day then avoid daytime napping. If you get headaches after sleeping in general whether day or night then you should see your doctor....

Now then, your body is governed by several different rhythms and one of them is called the Circadian Rhythm (circa meaning on or about and dian meaning day.) So the circadian rhythm runs about 24 to 25 hours. It tells you when to sleep and when to eat and when certain things should happen inside your body and it helps control your metabolism. In the early afternoon around 1 to 3 pm your circadian rhythm dips during that time and you get sleepy. Most of the time we attribute this to eating to heavily at lunch but that's not always the case. Studies show a natural human tendency for sleepiness in the early afternoon. Many countries allow for a little time off from work during this part of the day and they go have a little "siesta", or nap.

There probably is some type of fluctuation in our blood sugar when this happens but it's most likely a by-product and not a cause of the sleepiness. If you feel sleepy during this time of day and can take a short nap then do so. If not then try to eat light at lunch and have a little caffeine on hand but don't overdo it or you'll have trouble sleeping at night. If you are tired and sleepy no matter what all day long then you should have a sleep study. And finally if you have no trouble sleeping and you feel great all day long then stop reading this.

For some people it does. We are sleepy after lunch because of a drop in blood sugar.
