For example, some people may understand the evidence that tobacco causes cancer and heart disease, and yet still continue to smoke under the assumption that they will be included in the small minority that escapes these calamities.

So what do you intellectually accept as a proven fact, but nonetheless fail to incorporate into the rest of your thinking?

Off the cuff answer: Mr. Bush is the President of the United States.
Serious answer: I am going to die. Intellectually that's easy to accept. It's going to happen, no doubt about it. Even if I somehow transfer memories and thought patterns into a robot or whatever sci-fi sort of solution you can think of, I personally am in the process of dying right now.

I don't fear death or anything, but it's still hard on some deeper level to comprehend. As the years go by I'm getting to, though.
Let's just stick with George Bush is the President of the United States.

I do accept that smoking causes heart disease and cancer, the proof is there, anyone who has an addiction knows what the re-procussions can/will be, but with the case of smoking its an addiction and that over rides any common sense thinking.

firstly, the Bible which you examine grow to be compiled six hundred years after Christ died. while you at the instant are not Catholic, then you quite are not Christian, simply by fact the forebears of right this moment's Catholicism 'wrote' the Bible. They desperate what books have been blanketed and that have been excluded. you're basically uncovered to an abridged version of the Bible; there are a dozen Gospels, not basically 4. earlier the Canonical convention, Christians examine the Gospel of Thomas, the Gospel of Mary Magdalene, and countless others. around six hundred advert, those books have been deemed not worth for the Bible and ordered burned. The closer you get to the lifestyles of Jesus, the bigger the Bible gets. The ancestors of the Canonical convention have been the Popes that had distinctive different halves, offered front to Heaven for money, and used their potential to impact kings for the time of Europe. All Christian religions come from them. this is a exceedingly undesirable place to base a faith on. The King James version of the Bible is a translation that grow to be finished interior the 1500's. The language (thee, thou, and so forth) grow to be outdated-formed whilst it grow to be written, yet grow for use to make the Bible look greater real, like it grow to be older than it quite grow to be. lots of the text cloth is mistranslated, simply by fact it went from Aramaic to Greek to English. King James did not worry to bypass back to the unique text cloth; he translated from Greek translations (2nd, 0.33- hand). Christianity is a farce. It has just about no foundation surely. this is been molded and formed to comply with the targets of adult males. If the Bible is authentic, then ninety 9% of each human that has ever lived is in Hell. guy has been on earth for many hundreds of years. No Indian ever heard of Jesus till 1600 years after his demise. No Pacific Islander ever heard of Jesus till Captain cook dinner. Australian aboriginees all went to hell till the nineteenth century. Is God that merciless? i don't think of so.

That flying is safer than riding in a car.

I understand that statistically that is true, that I am much more likely to be in a car accident than in a plane crash. In fact, I've been in three car accidents (I was never the driver!).

The difference though is.. I'm still alive, whereas if it had been a plane crash I was in, I probably would not be.

That the Sun does not rise or set and it is the Earth that spins.
I know that is the truth, and sometimes it is even a part of my calculations, but all of my personal senses tell me that I am standing still and that the Sun and the Stars revolve around me.

LOL...

I still have a great deal of trouble accepting that there really are people who believe that John Smith dug up anything of value and I have just as much trouble believing that there are folks who believe Mary was a virgin or that Mohammad was an honest man and a prophet... and quite a few similar rib-ticklers of beliefs that people have actually adopted.

It's just amazing how dumb some people can be; but alas, it is true. There's a whole bunch of wooden-heads out there, and that's an amazingly troubling fact..

I agree that universe and its hugeness is something that is hard to grasp.

I do a lot of traveling and it is amazing that the planes stay in the air like that and we can decide where we are going.

About the refrigerator, it is cold inside and warm outside.

I don't think I can ever get my head, intellectually, around how vast the universe is.

I try but...it's too huge.

Also time stumps me. How long a billion years really is...

(edit) It took me 10 years to get Shroedingers Cat, but I finally got it! Guess how? Hmmmm
