I was hanging around the Singles & Dating board a few minutes ago, and it occurred to me that when someone posts something like "how cn u talk 2 girl" or "shud i hav sex wid my bf", or similar, isn't one doing the human race a disservice by assisting these individuals in their efforts to find a mate and pass on their genes? Note, I'm not suggesting forced sterilization or the like - but maybe it would be a good idea to put subliminal "get your tubes tied" messages in, say, episodes of Jerry Springer.

Hmmm...come to think of it, if the overt content of those shows doesn't drive one to desire the extinction of the entire human race, maybe subliminal messages are futile after all...

My, teaching, you're certainly quick to judge me!

You'll note, I said "reproduce" not "raise children". I'm talking about genetics here.

I'd rather see children raised by someone who is a bad speller, but has a good heart than someone who is so quick to make judgements.

Addendum:
I'm sorry if you feel as though I was judging you, but I see problems with spelling as very low on the list of things that make a poor parent/genetic donor.

Some very intelligent people find it extremely difficult to spell. Most of what you're talking about here is due to the computer culture.

I do think open-minded people make better parents, but, like all of this discussion, that is just my opinion. I respect your opinion, but I vehemently disagree with it.

Just to rest your mind at ease, I do not allow my students to use the abbreviated form of language that is used so frequently on message boards, IMs and such.

Maybe their just being lazy or typing fast. Who knows? They could be a scientist or Doctor for all you know. You can not really judge a persons genetics by the way they type? That is not a smart question coming from someone who is trying really hard to look like a smart girl ;)

I love your question. One of my best friends is on several dating sites and will not date anybody who can't spell. It's one of my pet peeves too! My ex was a teacher and he didn't know whether to laugh or cry at these type of students. He even had to fail one of them & the mother came to school ranting/raving at the principal. The principal came to him, told him to pass this kid & "get his mom out of my hair"! No wonder these people can't read or write!!!!

I have to say I admire your bravery, considering how much heat you're going to get for asking this. But thanks for the chuckle, in any case.

that's what they said, new tech creates new culture.
it's like short form writing...
nothing to do with genes...
