i live in a different country and i always see soldiers making fools out of them selfs and the rest of us americans when they are out and about, i know they get briefed about this by their commanders and yet nothing changes, why is that? should the commander be held responsible? i mean after all ,the commanders try to pass the buck onto the nco in charge of the troops, why is it not their responsibility to teach these young soldiers how to act?

Watch your wording, it's a legitimate question, but your bound get extremists expressing their views about Iraq without considering your details.
Commanders should be held responsible, they set the tone for what is acceptable. But you can't forget the words of Sun Tzu "If words of command are not clear and distinct, if orders are not thoroughly understood, the general is to blame. But if his orders are clear, and the soldiers nevertheless disobey, then it is the fault of their officers."
I've been to bases where the town loved the military, good for the economy, polite, wild once in a while.
On the other hand I've been to some bases, where rules weren't enforced and it was a mad house. troops disgracing their service, their country, and themselves.
...and Asian countries love American soldiers!

would be interested to actually know just WHAT country you are describing to be honest.

As a Brit [now living in the USA] there was a smallish base up the road when it was manned by marines, great as they are, basically the town would get torn up each weekend,......... to the point where they was banned from most places, the money they spent was NOT worth having the plumbers on standby at 2am to make good any damage [they did seem to like ripping urinals off the walls..............] BUT then the US Navy came in and with it a much older crowd many with families etc etc and the overall view of the US service member was much different.

BUT have got to agree be it Asia, the UK or Germany the men are usually very very sort after...................

So again I ask from what country are you viewing them?

Regards

Well, certainly some soldiers are an embarrassment, but I don't think most are. I suspect it is just that the ones that are most noticeable are the ones doing things they shouldn't, and people form an opinion based on that. These days, many soldiers come from the worst of circumstances, and it's a credit to the commanders that most are quite well-behaved.

...well, ask the people in those countries to think and realize that those soldiers (and the US) are the ones that are the driving force for the defense of Democracy and Freedom in this world,
... because as a matter of fact, most countries now adays just sit back and do nothing in the fight against the bad guys out there! and it is practically up to us alone to carry the burden of the fights against the buttholes out there!

so let them blow some steam, and make a fools of themselves..they have earned it!

When the cat's away the mice will play.

When the teacher leaves the room, don't the students act up?

These guys and gals have a lot of work to do. Let them have a bit of laughter. Since you didn't describe specific behavior, what do you consider "making fools of themselves"? Is it really that bad.

Every profession has individuals that embarrass it.
You indicated that you spent 11 years in the service, I can not believe that you always acted in the most proper manner in public, especially when you were young.

I found two videos of Army soldiers shooting dogs in Iraq and then another video of a unit firing on civilians running for their lives and then the troops were cheering and laughing about it. Hey I guess everyone needs to blow off steam right.

I was going to post them but I know some stupid flag wavers would probably hit the violate button. Email me if you want to be disgusted and pissed off.
