The AK-47 has more penetrating power, rang, life span, durability, and an alumni barrel- so it doesn't need cleaning, and it's been around for 50 years, and it's cheap too.
The M16 is out dated, it's magazine has to have dog feet put on it, because it wasn't made for that gun. But it is quieter than the AK47.
The 5.4 round for the newer AK47 gives it less recoil and more range and stopping power.
...so the AK47 is better

The two most common assault rifle families in the world are the Colt AR-15 (designated the M16 by the United States military) and its variants, and the Avtomat Kalashnikova Model 1947 (AK-47). These two have been compared since the late 1960s as rival models, and so have spawned controversy and comparison.
The US Army is currently evaluating a new Main Battle Rifle to replace the M-4 (A variant of the M-16A2) with a high speed round that has better knock down power. As for best rifle the argument is how well the weapon can function in the hands of a ignorant farmer with just a few minutes of training. The winner goes to the 47 due to its simplicity and ruggedness also the 7.62X39 has a better knock down power at this time,we'll see what the boys at the puzzle palace cook up soon. Warchild!

I prefer the M-16 and its subsequent variants in current use. I have nothing against the AK 47 merely because it is made in Russia. Let us be clear, the AK 47 is not necessarily the weapon you really mean.
The standard Russian rifle is the AKM. Some call it the AK 74M. This weapon went into production initially for our neighbors, Soviet Spetznatz. However, it then got issued to all regular army troops.
Unlike the 47, the 74 shoots a 5.45 round. So, while it is a similar looking weapon, the AK 47 is not a first line weapon for Russia's military. Of course, there are millions of them in service around the world which makes them a favorite amongst many third world nations and armed factions.
Regards.

The AK. Its 7.62 mm round is more accurate, has greater distance and more knockdown power than the .223 cal. (5.56 mm) of the M16. However, as for the M16 not being an automatic, as "learned in ARMY LIFE" stated above, I'd have to say you should re-familiarize yourself with your weapon. Were you one of my Marines, instead of an Army puke, you'd know that there are 3 versions of the M-16 rifle. There is the CIVILIAN model which is semi-automatic. It fires as quickly as one can pull the trigger. Then there are 2 seperate military models. The retired M-16 A-1, is a shoulder fired recoilless rifle of .223 caliber, and has a 3 position selector switch which will allow it to fire in either single shot, or fully automatic and a safe position. The M-16 A-2 is also a shoulder fired recoilless rifle of .223 caliber which also has a 3 position selector switch, but it fires a 3 round burst, instead of a full automatic mode. This is to ensure 2 things. The barrell has adequate cooling time so as to prevent warpage and overheating, and misfires. It also promotes fire control. Which is your ability to control how many rounds are put through the weapon. In a firefight, it is common for a man to pull the trigger on an automatic weapon and hold it until the magazine is empty. He's fired up to the first 3 rounds on target, and then the next 27 into nothing. But fear and adrenaline kepth the trigger pulled until the weapon quits firing.
The AK-47 has various models as well. The Kalishnikov model 1947 as produced by the Soviet Govt. is a rock solid monster of a weapon that is accurate out to 800+ meters, (Modified AK's for snipers are accurate up to 1600 meters)compare to the M-16 A 2's 600 meter maximum effective range. However, the Chinese version, comonly referred to as the SKS, is a spun barrell version accurate to no more than 200 meters, and is prone to misfires and warpage due to the weakness of its barrell design and manufacture techniques.

I would pick the M-16 / M-4 any day of the week. With only basic maintenance these weapons are very reliable and much more accurate than the AK.
With an M-16 I can take you out before I am even in range for the AK.

Of the two, the AK47.
However, they both are crappy designs compared to some of the newer stuff.
The AK47 was long ago replaced by the USSR/Russian with the AK74.
The M16 is an under powered second rate pop gun selected by a civilian bean counter and not by a military arms board. In fact, the Stoner design LOST to the M14 design. And it still is a piece of crap and the troops are still asking for something with more power.

The AK47; it is the most reliable automatic weapon out there, and has been for more than 50 years, being used during the Korean War by the Chinese and North Koreans.
The M16 will clog easily from mud/snow; the AK47 just keeps firing. Of course, the M16 is NOT an automatic weapon, but it can be converted. Its normal mode is single shot; but, that means as fast as you can squeeze the trigger, it will fire.
