Clothes fit looser.
Areas where flab usually settles--vary with the individual--start becoming more defined (tummy/waistline, neck/chin/jaw, thighs/rear...).
Joints are less likely to ache. Probably improvements with blood pressure / heart rate / respiration occur.
Depending on how one is becoming slim, you CAN'T rely totally on a scale in my experience -- you might be losing fat but adding muscle if exercising, so it won't be reflected there so much. Can also fluctuate with water weight, etc.
Anyway, the general signs of physical fitness are what I'd look for. Most people might just monitor the scale, but I personally find that the least helpful of possible measures.
[I also personally have found it more helpful to think of improving fitness and health, rather than just losing weight or becoming slim. Somebody can starve themselves and technically become sickly "slim," but metabolism can slow and get thrown off for the long-haul, and it's the long-term ability to maintain and have reasonably healthy habits day-in, day-out that matters most. Regular walking and doing one's own cooking is a great place to start for someone who's been sedentary, for example....]
Anyway, is the question about a "fat" body getting physically thin, or actually about signs of someone improving their health and fitness?

1) if your weight goes down
2) if you pants fit better and clothes are more loose
3) if you can hit the next notch back on your belt
4) if you feel thinner (usually happens after the first 2)
5) if your muscles become more defined and there is less flab to pinch
6) if your body fat decreases (simple test any trainer can give you or dr.)

A good indication would be when your old clothes stop fitting cuz theyre too big and you have to go out and buy smaller size clothes.

I just realised I'm losing weight because my pants fell down and I had to get more holes punched into my belt.

Just your scales. How do you look? Has anyone said anything about how good you are looking? What kind of diet are you on? How do your clothes fit?
