This question was asked of several top scientists, and almost all were able to come up with an answer. Such speculation is the way we generate hypotheses, so don't be ashamed to have a belief that you cannot yet prove, so long as if it is disproved, you give it up.

MY BELIEF: My dog and cat love me in a way akin to the way I love them.

I believe that humanity can rise above pettiness and superstition. Unfortunately, I cannot prove that we can.

I cannot prove that god does not exist but there is gathering scientific evidence that he does not answer prayer or is ineffective if he does. The lessor religious questions, of heaven and hell being real, and of miracles being factual, are likewise unproved.

To all of this, however, there is such a great lack of substance that I believe it is fair to conclude that this fact is itself the only proof needed after such a long period of searching. No proof of existence is the proof of non-existence.

I cannot prove that the universe is infinite, that it always was and always will be, ever-changing, but I believe it to be logically so.

I believe in human potential.
I believe that my homemade Chicken Soup will cure what ails you.
I believe that one person can make a difference.
I believe art, poetry, and music are more deeply rooted in what it means to be human than any god. I think that art, poetry, and music are what makes us puny humans, human. If I were to explore a "spiritual" path, it would be the path of humanness. While nature is great, and lovely, it would be great and lovely if no one were there to watch it, but Hamlet, for that to be great, you need a whole mass of HUMANS joining together to produce and experience that transcends time and space to be the most freakin' awesome way to spend an evening. I think that Bethoven's Fifth is the most "sublime noise to ever penitrate the ear of man."

Okay, now you all think I am in need of professional help. :) But, I really feel that way, even though I can't prove it.

I know a lot of things by intuition. In fact it is almost always the starting point for me in the lab. I have a hunch and I start to follow it.

I also have a great deal of faith in my abilities to solve problems. I tend to believe I can do just about anything I set my mind to.

I have loads of beliefs that I cannot prove. For instance, I believe that we will discover a way to merge human intelligence with computers and create augmented brains for ourselves. I believe we will discover how life arose on Earth. I believe I will build a house one day.

There's nothing wrong with having beliefs grounded in reality.

It's supernatural beliefs that get people into trouble.

I believe there is no God simply because I have seen no real evidence that he exists. I cannot prove this because I cannot look up every single possible source that might show that there is one. This is why I believe that it is irrational to believe in a higher power but not 100% impossible that there is one.

I believe that there are other life forms out in our solar system.
I also believe that aliens have visited earth many years ago and are visiting us again now.
I believe that there is a cosmic event that will change how we live.

That everything in the universe that is, was, or ever will be can be explained through natural phenomena. Everything we've found so far works, but hey, maybe there's something out there we won't be able to explain - but I doubt it.

Oh, and that there's intelligent life elsewhere in the universe.
