For high acid food like tomatoes it is 1 year. For low acid foods up to 5 years - but in no case keep dented cans long term.

That is not actually known. A man ate a 50 year old canned chicken which he bought on his wedding day. He ate it to celebrate his 50th wedding anniversary. No ill came to him. Other canned goods have only lasted 10 years. It depends upon how good a job was done during canning. It also depends upon storage conditions. If it were stored in the Arctic for all that time it might yet be good. IF in doubt, don't eat it. It's cheaper to get a new can than it is to take an unnecessary risk.
