depending on your style and how you look, there are certain ways to appear a little better than real life:
1) black and white or sepia pictures soften flaws like pimples, and even wrinkles/freckles, but still show off your body.
2) to photograph your face, place the camera above you and either to the left or right side (whichever you prefer), and look up at the camera while smiling.
3) Emo pictures don't make anyone look cute - just pouty
4) get pictures in your natural element around friends and just doing what you like to do - the most relaxed smiles and unfaked poses bring out your true personality the best
5) find a good picture editing site like picasa (download for free) - I always use that to adjust the lighting of the picture which is always a good flaw hider and can give your pictures more of an artistic look to them

hope it helps.

The photographers skill working with people is the key. Get a good photographer who knows how to direct and coach a model so she/he looks her/his best.

Personally I use fantasy and mental role playing to get the model(s) into the shoot.

It's all about engaging the model's consciousness so the poses and expressions tell the right story.

Just Vogue for the camera ! Take a bunch of shots while quickly posing in different positions. Pick the best ones. Have your self a little mini photo shoot!

I find pictures look better generally when people are in a lighter environment and all of their shadows aren't highlighted. Also wearing foundation on your face combined with the camera's flash will really do a good job in hiding imperfections. Taking pictures from a level a bit higher than your face usually looks better than right straight on or from below your face level. Happy picture taking! ;)
