my friend and i jst found an apartment, we are 18, and we know how to decorate every room but the bathroom. we have the colors we want (blue, green, and a lighter pink) and we want a kind of tropical outlook but when it comes to painting the walls we have no idea how we want to do them....any suggestions?

i'd stay away from painting the walls pink - light pink is very gendered (as opposed to, say, fuschia, which can come off as bold and modern). blue or green would be good choices, but don't assume you have to paint all the walls. one fun thing to do is use tiny nails to mount a piece of trim about 36" up, parallel to the floor, all the way around the room. paint either above it or below it a color, and leave the rest white. if you're feeling dexterous, using masking tape to make blue and green stripes could be really striking. or paint one wall completely as an accent wall, and leave the rest plain. or just paint the tub alcove. or paint patterns of squares or rectangles on the wall behind the vanity mirror.

no matter what color paint you chose, be sure to use high-gloss paint to deter mildew.

another cool decor trick: wall decals. there are some amazing ones here: http://www.fermlivingshop.us/stickers/index.html if you can't afford the decals, use them as inspiration for creating your own stencils.

Going with a color away from the color scheme that's already in place will be very difficult. I hear what you say about not beige and all, but just for the sake of argument, a neutral color would be the easier way to go, since maybe you don't know what color the tenant likes - or hates for that matter. A butter-cream is sort of all three (yellow, beige and white) mixed. Is there any other color in the bathroom besides yellow and white? Is the yellow really bright or lighter? Could you do a soft, light blue with the colors already there, then accent with more blue? Or go with the lighter blue but do some stenciling using the yellow & white? You might want to consider going to a paint store and finding a color card that has your yellow on it, then talk with one of the store employees about some options. And isn't the usual rule for color coordination about using the colors opposite on a color wheel? Good luck.

I would go blue, but depending on the shade of blue and the size of the bathroom, it could make the bathroom look smaller, if the bathroom is small then go light like the pink, but it also depends on what nick nacks you plan to have in there to decide the wall color,
maybe "after you set-up (decorate) your bathroom the way you want it try putting alittle paint on the wall of each color and decide what looks best.
I hope Ive helped :o)
good luck and congratulations on the apartment

1] paint light blue background
2] paint vines etc like a jungle
3] paint heads of animals, birds, or whatever peeking out
Look up jungle shower curtains online - you can get some great design ideas!
