Today I went back to my apartment on my lunch break and saw this older orange kitten come tearing out of an apartment like the devil himself was on his tail. I snagged him, only to find out, much to my disgust, that this poor cat was slicked down with something. The owner comes out, to get her cat, and when I asked what was all over the cat, she told me that she had slicked her cat down with vasiline because it gets rid of fleas.

I have never heard of this, and quite frankly, that sounds a little hinky.

Has anyone else heard of this?

Well I have never heard of that before but in theory it could work... if it blocked the fleas from getting oxygen, but that would only kill the adult fleas and not the pupa.. those things are practically immortal. In any case its a pretty ridiculous thing to do but people nowadays are pretty ignorant and if someone tells them something they don't question they just take it as truth. She can cover the cat in vaseline all she wants, she wont get rid of fleas until she kills all the ones in the environment.

>>>I have never heard putting on a cat before. However, I have heard of putting it on a yellow stick (or something like that) and putting in a potted plant to attract those little bugs that plants sometimes get. Also, I am pretty sure that if you put something like Vaseline on a tick, it will not be able to get oxygen and will supposedly back out of the skin it is embedded in. Perhaps she is making up her own remedy for fleas. Poor cat!

I would not think Vasline would be safe for an animal to lick and digest. No, have never heard of it. Ask the woman why she doesn't just give the poor cat a bath and buy something to get rid of fleas at the store or the vets office?

I have never heard of this before , but it sounds like a hokey home remedy to me . Vasiline is not going to get rid of the fleas only torment the cat and give him diarreaha sp* from trying to lick it off.

Vaseline will not rid a cat of fleas. Vaseline is used to help cats digest hairballs..but never as a flea repellent.

Tell your neighbor to use dish soap in a bath for the kitten. Dish soap baths kill fleas, and are cheap. She should not get it into the eyes, but use a flea comb on the face, and around the ears. After one to two weeks she can repeat this to kill newly hatched fleas. Dish soap kills fleas. (Rinse thoroughly).

That's ridiculous. Vaseline won't kill the fleas, and that is a horrible thing to do to a cat.

Disgust? That sounds about right! You sound normal, this woman is a lunatic- thus your reaction. Vaseline? I could just vomit.
