A couple of years ago our puppies had parvo and died, but it took a few days from when they became weird to their actual death, but the vet did everything he could and it didn't help by the time symptoms were showing.

Recently one of our dogs who was just 1-year old began acting weird and bleeding overnight. Turned out it was whipworm, and he was dead the next day at the vet's office. We treated our other dogs and there were no other problems.

Last night all our puppies were fine. This morning my dad checked on them, one of the puppies (4 months old) was bleeding. He gave him medicine for whipworms, but he only lasted a few hours. Another of the puppies was acting sick, so he gave him medicine too. He just now vomited the medicine up-several hours after giving him that and medicine to settle his stomach. We now have 2 other puppies who are vomiting. So we are treating them with medicine to settle their stomach, whipworm, and taking all the water and food away from them. We are not sure if they will make it, or the other puppies we have who have shown no symptoms (but have taken the medicine), but they are not bleeding so we are hopeful.

With whipworm, by the time the dog starts bleeding and eggs show up in the stool, it is usually almost too late. It is scary how the dog can be fine one day, and the next be dying.

My puppy (Jack) was like that too. He had diarrhea and blood too. Jack was freezing cold and his gums were grey.

I got home from work to find him like this and we rushed him to the 24 hour hospital. Here they put him on a drip and wrapped him up in bubble wrap to get his temperature up. He had approximately 20 blood tests while he was at the hospital over a period of 3 days. After having plasma and oxygen he began to improve.

His blood results come back inconclusive but most likely some jerk fed him rat bait.

Was your puppy outside by itself while you weren't watching because if he was than he might of been baited.

I'm so sorry for your loss, he was too young to pass away. I know exactly how you feel as my first dog died from a car accident. It is a horrible thing to happen and with time I hope that you are able to move on and get a new puppy dog.

Good Luck, I'm so sorry:(

He may have gotten into something...rat or snail poison. Did you let the vet know what happened???

Don't blame the vet, they do the best they can, but some dogs just get sick so fast they can't stop it.

Morgan Stanley : NO anal gland impaction would NOT kill a dog that quick...idiot (don't give out bad info ! ) Anal gland impaction can cause infection, not death and not that fast.

Puppies don't usually have heart worms BTW

You haven't said how old this puppy was or how long you'd had it or where you got it from.

Did you let the person or place you got it from know what happened????

It sounds like Parvo--an intestinal virus. The worms and vaccines could have further weakened him. I've seen plenty of pups die within 24 hours of showing symptoms (acting "weird"). Be careful about getting another puppy--if it was parvo, the virus can live in the ground for up to a year and be infective. Your vet has no way of knowing the puppy has been exposed to parvo unless you told him the puppy was acting sick--and if so he wouldn't have vaccinated it.

The very same thing happened to my dog. I adopted him at 6 months. He was full of life and always energized. One morning he did not act like himself. I took him to the vet and they x-rayed him, gave him some antibiotics. The next day he bled out his butt--it was the most foul smell I have ever smelled. I have talked to many "old timers" who have raised dogs for 30 years plus. They say it is Parvo virus. The vet would not comment. As far as I am concerned, the vet let my dog die. Parvo causes the intestines to slough off. It can be a slow process or it can kill the dog quick and without much warning. Sorry for your loss.

So sorry for your loss. The bleeding from the rectum could of been caused by an ulcerated colon. This is common in small breed dogs. This happened to my dog a couple months ago but he didn't die from it. He was deficating huge amounts of blood where his hole rear end was dripping with blood. The vet said they don't know what causes it to happen and it can happen suddenly without any symptoms. It scared me to death he spent the night at the Vet hospital and $325 later he was back to normal.

Could he have ingested something, such as human medications, anti-freeze, cleaning solutions, non-food items, etc, etc? Any trauma to his abdomen?

It could even be a bad reaction to the medication he was given.

I'm afraid there is also a possibility that your vet may have miss-diagnosed its problem. If you really must know, you *could* take him to another vet and ask for autopsy, but either way, it won't change anything in the end.

I'm sorry.... let him just rest now.

I am completely appauled that some people find funny to put rude comments on threads like this.

I did a little bit of research on this one after i read your question, and i found a list of puppy diseases and symptoms. Note, that it does sound like parvo to me due to the bloody stool, and the rapid deterioration. I hope this info helps you, and im sorry for your little one.

I am sorry to hear about your puppy, chances are there was nothing you could do once he got heartworm. Heartworm, even when diagnosed, is not always curable even if you do everything right. The only surefire way to prevent a heartworm death is to prevent heartworm in the first place which is why it is SO SO SO important to take your dogs to the vet and use the preventative measures they give you.
