Is it possible to be a secular theist? By this, I mean someone who believes in the existence of a God or gods, but thinks that organized religion is bunk (secular meaning "not having anything to do with the church). I tried to look this up and couldn't really find anything at all. If this is possible, but goes by a different name, what would that name be?

OK, I am a theist, as opposed to a deist (and yes, I DO know the difference). In addition, I am not agnostic; I know that I believe in God and have reasons other than "the Bible tells me to." It's just that every organized religion out there seems to contradict themselves, and I don't think it is necessary to belong to one religion or another in order to believe in and worship god.

One other thing that I feel is important after reading some of the answers: I am not a Christian, nor am I Jewish, Muslim, Baha'i, Buddhist, etc. That's the whole point to this question. I am not necessarily trying to label myself, merely to find out public opinion about this, and see if there are others who feel similarly.

Sorry, but I thought of one more thing: I believe in theistic evolution and do not believe in an afterlife. I believe that we become worm food after we die, but that is part of god's plan, in order to help perpetuate the Earth for future generations.

Yep, Paganism has an entire branch of people like that called Solitaries. They have faith, but believe it should be practiced in solitude, as opposed to a group, because it is a deep and personal experience and should be treated as such.

No, a true christians should not have secular view about church because Jesus himself would go to the temples and preach to the Jewish Elders. The Bible says "whenever two are three are gathered in his name HE is (God) there." Paul in the New Testament had written about the early church and why it is important to support and live in harmony with fellow christians. It is also important because a church with a group of christians can be easily preach the gospel of Christ, since it is the mission of christianity. Church is also important in one's social life, it also exhort and help you stay on track in order to live accordingly with the teachings.

Well, it would depend on whether or no you believe in a theistic god (a god that interferes with life and you can have a personal relationship with) or deistic god (a god that does not interact with the universe currently and you don't have a personal relationship with).

Either a theist or a deist.

It is indeed possible. Many who believe in a god have nothing to do with churches.

the teachings of their particular belief be it Jesus or Buddha or what ever . you don't need a title or type cast but if you like good luck in finding one.
