I'm going to buy a UV lens to protect the lens on my Digital SLR and I bought a small carrying case, as well. Do y'all have any advice for a new D SLR user? Maybe in terms of using it? Little things are very helpful, too.

You want to get a nice, powerful flash unit. The built in one is probably way too whimpy. Something like a Sunpak 383, with a guide number of 160, a real photon torpedo. Better but more expensive would be one compatible with the camera's dedicated automation, but that isn't really needed. You can get nice soft-shadow shots in a room with the white cieling by tilting the flash at the cieling and putting the flash on automatic.

I'd skip the UV filter. They can harm image quality and the glass in your lens really isn't all that delicate.

I'd get a flash made for your camera by its manufacturer. The middle range models like Canon 430EX or Nikon SB-600 are great. You'll get dead-on exposure with them, even when using bounce.

Play with your camera. No film to buy! Try crazy stuff. Keep your eyes open at sunset.

Buy fewer lenses, but the best you can afford.

Take extra time to take each photo. Try to take the best shot each time instead of "spray and pray" snapshots.

Change the height of your shots.

Get closer.
