I assume you've been reported to ChexSystems.
First understand that not all banks use ChexSystems, although most do. Call around and ask each bank before you go in what verification system it uses. You'll find one you can open an account with.
Second, you need to order your ChexSystems report. You can do this for free here https://www.consumerdebit.com/consumerinfo/us/en/chexsystems/report/index.htm.
Third, when you get this report, you'll want to dispute anything on it. The bank might not verify it.
Fourth, if the problem was really with your ex, go to the bank manager and explain. Ask that they take you off this report. It may work.
Good Luck.

You've taken the first step by recognizing the problem. Now take the next step and begin to repair your credit. All you need are the tools. Usually companies charge hundreds of dollars to simply pull your credit and send correctly worded dispute letters—this is the key…..people will tell you that you can do this yourself for free but the truth of the matter is that the credit bureaus will throw your letters away or simply reject them. There is an easy to use online kit that will deliver the results you want available for just $19.95 at the source website. A similar kit is being sold via infomercials and radio talk shows for seventy dollars more but they try to solicit you repeatedly for other services after the fact.

I agree with everything Luke posted.
I just wanted to add that you might go to www.chexvictims.com
They have an excellent data base of banks and credit unions that do not use Chex and you will probably be able to find one in your area.
That site ( the data base, discussion forums, etc) is totally free to use
