If you want to cast, push the button while suppressing the spool with your thumb, then when you cast, lightly let the spool roll out the line under your thumb.
You will probably have problems at first with the line getting tangled up around the spool. It's called backlash, and it happens because the spool is sending out the line faster than the line is coming out of the reel.
Some tips for backlash are to cast things that are kind of heavy at first, and don't cast into the wind. There should be a knob on the side of the reel to control the speed of the spool. If you end up with backlash, gently pull the tangled line out of the top of the reel (where you put your thumb). Don't pull too hard on the line, or you'll get it in knots that you'll never be able to get undone.
At first it takes a lot of practice, but if you just keep woking at it, you will find the luxuries of using a bait reel.

Thumb control of spool is the big factor in castin' one. A suggestion, ya' may want to go to a heavier # test, say 20 beeeecause the lighter the line the more chance of "birdnestin'" (tanglement of line on reel) can occur. The old sayin' "Practice makes perfect" definitaly holds true, the best thing for you to do is practice your castin' in an open area (backyard or?) and not at the time your fishin' ;) Here be a link that may help ya', it's a little "wordy" and unfortunately no diagrams or pics :(. Scroll down page and viola', "How to Cast the Baitcasting Reel". Good luck ta' you and remember "Patience is a virtue" ;). From an old fisherman with a lot of old quotes...
