I was walking across a parking lot today and this guy pulled up beside me and asked if I wanted to go for a ride. I was taken by surprise and didn't know what to say other than no thanks. What would have been a good come back?

I don't know how alarmed you were, and I don't know if you were anywhere near other people. Was your car nearby? Do you carry any weapons (pepper spray) in your purse?

This could have turned into a very dangerous situation. I think you did the best thing because anything else would have angered him or caused him to make you pay for your sassy remark. Maybe, Sorry, I'm taken. Or no thanks, I need the exercise. I'd have reported him to the police after that.

Maybe I'm overexaggerating this situation, but in TX stuff like this happens all the time, especially to cute co-eds walking by themselves. They slow down and ask for directions and the girl gets nabbed. They ask the kid to help find a lost puppy.

I hope you know how to defend yourself or have a means of disarming an attacker. Unfortunately, it's the only safe thing to do.

You did the right thing... you don't know what kind of maniac that person might have been and being sassy might just anger him into doing something violent. (especially since you were in a parking lot... lots of opportunities to take you away without witnesses).

Walk the opposite direction or walk between the cars to get away from him.

What are you stupid? Didn't your parents teach you how to deal with strangers? Take out your cell phone call 911. Run or walk quickly away, call to someone else in the vicinity? Do something to avoid being a victim.

Scream as loud as you could and flip him the bird at the same time, you will accomplish four things...

1) he will leave

2) it will attract attention

3) it will alert others as to the presence of danger

4) it will be funny as h3ll to see his expression

And try to video it so you can put it on MySpace.

"Not with you. Beat it."

Walk to the back of his car, take a picture of his license plate, and walk away quickly. Move with purpose and strength. Keep cell handy.

I would have said "Yes", and then continued walking. When he got out to open the door for me, say "Oh! You meant with you! No thank you."
