Should you choose a breed that is long-haired, but non-shed, you can take it to a good groomer who will keep it shaved short. This way, you have a wider variety of breeds to pick from, making it more likely the dog will fit your lifestyle personality-wise.

I think temperament should precede looks any day. Would you rahter have one that's pretty but drives you NUTZ, or one that looks kinda funny, but is SO in tune with your personality that it's like having a furry twin?

You could probably find one in a shelter or rescue. Try www.petfinder.com. Good luck!

I'm a dog groomer & in my opinion boxers are the breed that seem to need less grooming. They have short hair that doesn't shed very much - my clients only groom them for the fresh smell from the bath and for their nails.
Although, i hardly ever have to do their nails either because if the dog has somewhere to play (on concrete) they're usually active enough that their nails are short enough without having to cut them. So, all in all I think they're fairly low maintenance dogs.
*** if you decide to get a boxer, watch them for a while before you adopt them and see how much they slobber... some slobber alot & some hardly at all. They also have great dispositions and are very loyal

Well, I have a Min Pin and a Italian Greyhound and neither have to go to the groomer. The Pin sheds more that the IG, but neither shed much at all. No one even notices. You are not supposed to bathe them excessively either, their skin will dry out. Usually every 2 weeks is good, as long as they don't get into anything icky. You can get their nails clipped at the vet or do it yourself once a month. LOW maintenance, but you might want to read up on them first, all dogs have their little quirks. And since they are small, they are kinda fragile and you can't leave them outside all the time or in harsh conditions. My neighbor has a min pin as well and pisses me off constantly cause he leaves him out in such harsh weather...the poor little guy hates it there, he digs holes to come to my house all the time, and I don't blame him. Just make sure you get a dog that can fit your lifestyle.

the hypo-allergic breeds, such as poodle, wheaten terrier, bearded collie, PON and others do not shed.

I've never owned a poodle, but have owned multiple wheatens, including currently have one. I also currently have a PON and a Bearded Collie. The PON and Beaded Collie have long hair...the key here is that all the dogs I have mentioned have hair, not fur. They are also low maintenance in terms of grooming. I brush the wheaten and bearded collie 1X per week, sometimes more if we go hiking and they get burrs....but generally 1x. The PON goes swimming 2-3X per week and gets a quick brush while her hair is wet and thats it. While I'm not allergic to dogs or their shedding mess, I prefer not having to clean up all the shedding mess, which would ultimately take more time than it takes for a quick brushing. Most people who are allergic to dogs are allergic to the shedded fur and dander. I started brushing my dogs early as pups and they like it so its not a bother.

Any of the slick-coated breeds (pit bull, boston terrier, hounds, chihuahuas, etc.) shed mildly and only require a rubdown with a curry brush every week or so. Basically the dogs that have very flat lying hair. If they have any kind of puffy or thick hair (labs, huskies, etc.) they will require more brushing and grooming.

Xolos fit the bill as do other hairless dogs.

Single coated breeds still shed, but they shed short hair.

Labs for instance are a double coated short haired dog...they shed a lot.

Dobes are a single coated breed, they shed, but not as much.

Feeding and good health and grooming also reduce shedding.

Try a Stafordshire Bull Terrier. (NOT a pitbull)

Short haired.(doesnt moult)
Loves kids.
Not natrually aggresive.
Good house dog.
VERY loyal!

Yes they were bred for fighting! but.....to make a staffie fight, you have to spend hours n hours godeing(sorry spelling) them! ...and VERY cruel! and once you get them going (and this will take a very long time to train) they wont stop or let go till the end.

Treat a dog right and they will be the best friend you have ever had!

Only a REAL man could take a poodle for a walk ona lead!!!!....

Are you a REAL man? or do you NEED a status symbol to show how hard you are?....

A Dog is for life! not just for Christmas...

Love and respect your Dog and they will give the same back.

All of the Boxers I've worked with have literally no maintenance to their coats. You can pet them all you want, and nothing sheds. I also live in an area with lots of wildflowers and weeds, and there's never a burr stuck on them. Their coat is just to short to have anything stick to them.

Smooth haired dachshunds are really easy, grooming-wise. They do shed, but their hair is so short you hardly notice it. I loved my short haired doxie because he was truly "wash and wear" - all I had to do was towel him off after a bath and he was dry in 5 minutes, no brushing required.
