Somebody asks this question at least once a week!! My theory: the atheists look at the world around them, and ask questions, and are willing to consider a range of possible answers to basic questions. The more "extreme" Christians do not do this; they accept what they are told in church as the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth--despite the real evidence that the "church" has altered and withheld information throughout history!! (Now---for all you Christians who want to blast me for that one--there is also real evidence to support some Biblical events!! Watch Discovery channel)
So, what it all boils down to is the atheists (or even people like myself who believe in God) are utterly amazed that so many people in this category refuse to accept anything other than what they are TOLD to believe that they feel compelled to offer their point of view in hopes of jump-starting the thinking process in the others. Just a quick example: Were there REALLY only 3 wise men?? Who knows for certain? Perhaps there were 4...would it really matter?? Yet many people on here are sure there were only 3, because that is what the Church tells them. The rest of us think about that, and say, "Maybe"!!
At any rate, the discussion on here would be really boring if there was only a shared agreement, hmmm?? Enjoy your wine!!

Some atheists are here just to try to prove others wrong, which is dumb.

But there are many Atheists who really do know their facts on other beliefs, enough to discuss and debate matters with people of other beliefs. Why are Wiccans in R&S? Why are Christians in R&S?

Atheism isnt exactly a religion, but a belief just the same.

I suppose for the same reason there are people of any religious persuasion (or lack thereof). Spirituality is a topic that seems to speak to all universally.

Personally, I believe it is because we were all created with a longing after God. We have an innate desire to seek out that which we sense is true: there is something bigger than us out there. Some of us feel we have found it. Others are still searching.

I select all categories and answer questions I find interesting. It doesn't matter what the category is. If it's interesting I go for it. I think a lot of atheists are here though because they are curious about the other point of view. Some want to spread their message. And then you have the ones that are just here to hassle the religious.

According to the Bible (Romans 1), an atheist knows deep down in his/her heart that there is a God and “suppress the truth in unrighteousness.” Though an atheist is blinded by Satan’s lies, there is a longing in his/her heart to search and know God. That's one reason why an atheist hangs around in R&S section

the better question is if atheist believe in no god than why do they even bother debating christians.its really a angle from the atheist to try and justify there life style or sin. remove god and you have no moral judge or consequences,
