I really love this song that says:

"what religion or reason could drive a man to forsake his lover"

But I don't know what the word forsake means (I'm ESOL) and I don't have a dictionary here.

By the way, the song is Little Respect by Wheatus... you should download it!!!! ^_^

Forsook is the past tense of forsake. Forsake means to give up something, usually something formerly held dear. I have no idea how the word "forsook" fits into the sentence you've quoted.

To me, it means to completely turn away from the habit or person. There is no desire to return to this former situation. In today's language, one might call it a "doing a 180." It's like the complete opposite. For example, if an alcoholic "forsakes" alcohol, he never drinks again. The person may have the strong urge to have a drink, but there is no desire to return the former life.

I don't want to copy and paste a definition from a dictionary.

Forsake is almost the same as forget. To forsake one's lover would be to forget about them and never think about them again or to abandon them.

But, there are great dictionaries online...just run a search for "dictionary".
