Anthropologists have found that religions which originated from desert tribes tend to have one god, while those that originated from forest tribes tend to have many gods.
Forests tend to have a complex interplay of many factors, while deserts tend to be simplistic. So that probebly led early people to adopt a polytheistic or monotheistic view.
Once man has evolved to the point where he (she) can think critically atheistic views tend to predominate.

I am also a Hindu, and excuse me if this offends someone, but rationally speaking, there is no god. God is an imaginary being created by the ancient humans when they could not figure out how they were created or where they came from. Even now, we do not know 100% percent where we came from, but we know enough and god is not in that equation. As regards Hindu mythology there is a creator, a protector and a destroyer, thus forming the trinity of god. Some texts even claim that these are not three beings but three aspects of one supreme being. Talking about multiple gods, that's just a myth. It is a misinterpretation of ancient texts that just say "we should be so thankful to anything that provides us with something, as we would be thankful to the god that created us or protects us". That means a tree, a river, a cow... everything should be thanked as we would thank god. This is misread as "all these things ARE god"... so there is god for river, rain, cow and what not. The mis-belief was beneficial to the priests because the more the merrier. There is no actual multiplicity of god in Hindu mythology.

There is a solution to this by using the sound intellect you were given by God.
It is a logical necessity that the creations must have a creator.
That Creator would be Attributed with Will, Power, and Destining.
If one was to say there was more than one God then there is a logical argument against this. If one willed one thing and the other willed the opposite according to this argument, then the weak one is the one whose will did not occur (since opposite things cant happen together in a thing). The weak one is not God. Hence the argument that there is more than one God is proven incompliant with the sound intellect.

I tend to believe in one God who appears in many different ways. The human mind can't really conceive of all of God at once because God is so very BIG and all-encompassing, while our minds are small and our comprehension is limited. We tend to be looking for God in thought-sized pieces. Whether you want to call them The Father the Son and the Holy Spirit or whether you want to call them Shiva and Ganesh and company, you're doing essentially the same thing. I'm not saying these identities are made up, but just that they are a way for us to interface with something/someone that we otherwise would have a hard time with. You know that whole story with blind men trying to describe an elephant, don't you?

It may not make logical sense to you but nor does it make sense to your friend why there is just one, every culture has made there own god according to there belifes, we have our stories of Jesus just as they have theres, and you shouldnt argue over this, there is no point in arguing about someone else's belifes, also a comment to what mexmisser said, I hope she also knows that in the good bible it stated that taking a **** was a sin... A SIN! can you believe that, if god made us in his image, than why would it be a sin, so no, not everything you read in the bible is correct,Well I know its not the asnwer you were hoping for but good luck

Well, I've always grown up around a Christian family. That's why I believe in 1 God.
I really have no proof, except the way I feel when I know he's inside me and well, the facts such as the Bible and the facts even in the text books.
=)
The only way to truely know is to try it.

A closer look into Hinduism and you find that the many gods are more minor ones, They have a trinity like christianity. Brahma-creator principle, Vishnu- sustaining principle, and Shiva- dissolution principle. Yet deeper study concludes that all three of the trinity have their origin in ParaBrahma-The ONE beyond.

I believe in two.
Male and female.
Kali Ma and Lord of the Kham
My reasoning. She created Him, and with Him She created created everything. He takes the form of the Sun to represent, and She, the Moon. (Representations, not really the actual Moon) I do beleive that She is above Him though - She created Him. He is the only other Divine being - though at the Final Dissolution, He will perish too.
I beleive it because I know it to be true. I can feel it.
There is always to be the role of a Mother and a Father.
I beleive there are many many spirits, but should not be worshipped. They are evrywhere, in everything, protecting, guarding, sweet, malicious, mischievious, wise...Everywhere.

When I was younger I was in a Buddhist temple and I seen with my own eyes spirits went into the young virgin American girl to write in the sand messages for us to see. Everything was written in Chinese in a sand box and she was writing so fast you wouldn't believe it unless you seen it and it's really hard to write Chinese and everything was written so neat. Also I knew her, she didn't know how to write Chinese and her Chinese speaking was real bad. supposedly the spirit they summoned to go in her was Jesus and Quan yin
and I was a little girl so I never thought too much of it until I had a friend of mine who passed away, I couldn't stop crying and I couldn't even take care of my children it was horrible and then so many things started to happen to me and I and everyone got answers.
I know theirs a god because of everything that I was able to see and happen to me.
and if you ask someone who lost someone they loved I'm sure that they'd have a story about god to tell you.
today I believe that there are many gods and I became catholic at 19. I wish I didn't.
