they are like 26-28 inches and they have burned sun designs on them. im a martial artist getting higher in belts, only 16 and ive had them for a few years. there are a lot of dents where the wood is showing under the polish but nothing major. but on one stick there is this beginning to be a black tint and i dont know what it is. nothing i do is getting it off. is it because of the polish or wood or what?

Rattan sticks are usually burnt to make them more durable and harder. But some makers put varnish to make em look shiny and to prevent splinters, these types usually starts to look pretty dirty after a few hundred whacks against other sticks or against hard surfaces when the varnish gets peeled off. Unless they hamper your grip in some way or if you just own them for display purposes, I wouldn't really mind as long as you can still use em for practice, just replace em if it bothers you that much.

I've used rattan escrima sticks for about 20 years. I keep one set for kata and several other sets for striking/interactive drills. If you strike the sticks against each other very hard it is possible to crack or even break the stick. If you don't strike anything very hard they will last a long time.

The dark line could be a crack. Hold the stick lightly by one end and tap it against the floor. If you hear a light buzzing sound you have a crack somewhere in the stick and you should discard it right away for safety reasons.

rattan will last a long time They will dent maybe even "peel" but they won't break. I have some I've had for years. They have a few spots of black tape, keeping them from tearing and peeling. Rattan won't break. The only spots were mine are "black" is were they were burned so there I have no clue.

i have those exact same ones but i also have a pair of white oak ones that i use especially for striking. one thing you could do to protect them from denting, etc. is to wrap them in electrical tape. i say electrical tape because unlike other tapes you can still get a grip on them.

another note is that you usually will have to replace your sticks after years of regular practice. but white oak usally lasts the longest

I found these sticks don't last very long. Get some new ones.
