My nextdoor neighbors who are closer to us than our family are SADLY moving to Hawaii. I want to give them a nice memorable gift, what should I get them?

A gift card to a store that has a location where they are going. Whenever anyone moves they ALWAYS have to buy certain things for the house -- new mop bucket, wire racks, what have you -- so someplace with home goods is a great bet -- Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, Linens & Things. (Do they have these stores there?)

Or take them out to a really nice dinner and pay for the whole thing.

Or find a fancy restaurant in the town they are moving to and get them a good-size gift certificate to that place -- they will get a chance to check out the local spots and that helps them feel more at home in the new place --- they will think of you --- and it is SO NICE to be able to have dinner out when you are still busy unpacking your furniture!

Or something that folds really flat in a suitcase, like a silk scarf or a special (unframed) photograph of you together, or make a CD with a lot of photos of your times together.

Think about the fact that they are moving overseas, which is a pain and really expensive -- they really will not want to deal with more stuff to figure out how to pack it, whether to keep it, or whether to store it.

You can also mail them a gift after they have settled in --- give it a couple of months so they can get things sorted out. It will feel really good to them to know that although they have gone away you are still thinking about them. And if you come from a part of the country that has special food items (salsa, BBQ sauce, what have you) then send them a care package of local favorites that they can't get in Hawaii. My in-laws do this and we really appreciate it a lot.

Depends upon how much money you have to spare.

Keep it light and small - they probably have enough to take with them. Something with their initials engraved on it or something that will not break - candle stick holders comes to mind.

If you want to go wild, get them return round trip tickets to visit you on a date of their choice after they get settled. Just give a card with the "gift" in words. Then they can redeem it when they want to visit you.

Or get them something that matches the style of living they do - a wine of the month club, or a food of the month.

Oh, and, help them pack. That is one of the best gifts you can offer. And their last night in town, take them to dinner or cook for them.

Have fun. Sorry to hear when good friends have to part. You never know, you may find yourself looking at property in Hawaii one day...

If you still have time, make a scrapbook of memories - pictures of your families together, the town, some smallish items that will remind them of your fun times like maybe movie tickets or a label of your favorite local food. A photo mosaic of your old photos will do too, if you have little material for a scrapbook. They will surely appreciate whatever you give them.

Get them a little something that reminds them of where you live now. For example, I live in Texas and would do a Texas basket. Buy things they may miss and not think to bring.

What about a framed photo of your family or your town? -Something to remember what they're leaving behind.

something that symbolizes your friendship...a really nice frame with a photo of your family with them...some self-addressed, stamped envelopes with nice stationery (so they can write you when they get there)...
