If it is a mechanical, crew, or other airline responsible delay, the airline will put you on the next available flight. If the flight is the next day, they will give you hotel and meal vouchers if you aren't in your hometown. Most of the time they will put you on a different airline if they can not accomodate you in a reasonable amount of time, but this is governed by their Contract of Carriage.

If it is an Air Traffic Control or Weather Delay, they will still put you then next available flight but will not pay for hotel accomodations or meals and they will not put you on another air carrier.

In the case of the airline responsible delay you will hear people tell you about Rule 240, and they often give incorrect information about this rule. Read Rule 240 for yourself on any airlines website (it is in the Contract of Carriage) before you decide to make a fool of yourself. This applies to US Domestic carriers (exception Southwest Airlines) and states that the airline is responsible for putting you on the next available flight on any other IATA carrier.

Remember though, the other carrier does not have to accept your ticket at face value or even a FIM (generally a higher negotiated fare) issued by the airline you were traveling. This is where people get confused about Rule 240. If the other airline won't take your ticket, Rule 240 doesn't mean a thing.

No major US air carrier has any arrangements with Southwest Airlines, so they are never obligated to put you on Southwest.

If you are not in your hometown, they will give you a food voucher, and a voucher for an overnight stay at a hotel. When you find out your flight is canceled, go to the check-in desk right away. In another situation, they may give you a ticket with an airline partner, but their directions are basically cut in stone!

The airline will put you on the next available flight, (which they will tell you, which means crap). Basically, when they find the next flight to your destination that they feel like putting you on, they will put you on. Somtimes seats are sold out so who knows how long you maybe stuck. This usually works out fine 95% of the time. Don't worry about a canceled flight, you will figure it out when it happens, and fight for your rights with the airline if nessesary.

Go to the desk and line up with the other smchucks. 2 hours later you will have another ticket, probably next day.

You will get a voucher for a local Holiday Inn. You will then line up at the desk athe Holiday Inn with the other schmucks and get in bed by 1:30am.

Your flight out will be at 7am, so you need to get up at 4:30am.

That happened to me in Chicago, the signon the back of the door said "do not open your door for anyone" 5 mins later this huge guy is thumping on my door shouting room service.

WE are all having fun know.

Welcome to modern travel. It sucks.
