Shes been not eating and barely taking in any water. We thought it was her teeth so switched her to soft, wet food which she likes too and once or twice she has eaten and takes water but most days we try and try and will not eat. I know shes old and it may be time to put her down but my mom wants all the time she can have with her. Is there anything else other then going to a vet that we can try. taking her out of the house to go to the vet will probably be the last step but dont really want to have to do that if I dont have to.

Thanks so much

The best thing you can do for her is to take her to the vet. This does not necessarily mean the end..she is an older cat and at her age a lot can go wrong...BUT it may be something that is treatable. When was the last vet check up she had..older cats should see the vet at least once a year (unless they become sick). Sounds like she needs some bloodwork to see exactly what is going on....it could actually be something as simple as a bad tooth (like you suspected) or it could be something more serious..but you cannot get her treatment until you know WHAT it is.

Sometimes animals know when its time. 18 years is a very long time. I to recently had to make a decision my dog of 11 years had cancer, she was slowly dying right in front of my eyes and all I wanted was more time with her, I fed her baby food & chicken broth any thing to keep her going she new it was time I was thinking of how I would feel without her not what she was going thru, I won't lie It was the most hardest thing I have ever done or will do she was my friend. Anyway where I going with this is take the cat to the vet. If she is sick it may be simple you dont have to put her down right then wait untill mom is ready. Believe me your never ready to say goodbye to a dear friend.

Hi,
I am sorry about your cat, but it is possible you could take her to the vet and he might find what is wrong and be able to give her something to have a good quality life for however long she has. My 18 year old cat died a few years ago, however, I told myself as long as he was not in pain, I would let the vet treat him and keep him at home. He had kidney failure. So we treated it until his quality of life started to change and then I let him go. Your cat obviously needs help. If you take her in and they can not help her then I would let her go, but if they can help her (which is possible since you are not sure what it is yet) then I would keep her as long as she was eating again and had a quality life. The one thing I would never do with my older cat is LEAVE HIM at the vet as I did not want him to die there. So, I would either let the vet see if he can treat her at home for you, or if not and there is nothing they can do, then I would put her down, but I would not put her through horrific over the top measures, that is not fair to her. Maybe it is something they can easily help with, you won't know until you go. I wish you good luck.

So sorry to hear about your cat not eating or drinking. But you said she is 18 years old. She is starving herself, along with dehydration. She isn't going to be with you to much longer. Take her to the vet. There is such a thing as quality of life, and it would be selfish to keep her alive because of wanting more time with her. I had a cat that reached 22 years old, and she did this.. I took her to the vet,,, and saved her the suffering of starvation and etc... I would have liked to keep her longer, but I didn't want her to suffer

She needs the vet. It is actually cruelty to animals not providing veterinary care when needed.
Would your mother do the same thing to you would she have waited this long to take you to the doctors.
Get her to the vets she is suffering.
Now I don't know if there will be much chance for her you probably have waited to long she is probably severely dehydrated and malnourished that there may not be much hope there may have been more chance if taken in within 3 days of the symptoms

Aw, poor kitty, poor Mom, and good for you for looking after both of them. Please take her to the vet to find out if she's just under the weather or if she is seriously ill. You said, "Dont really want to have to do that if I don't have to." You DO have to do this. If she is really sick, it may be time, so prepare yourselves. BUT you could get good news and find out it's something easily treatable where you and your mom can have a couple more good years with her.
Just find out what it is and don't let the poor kitty suffer. Being hungry and thirsty 'cause you're sick feels terrible so don't let her go through that. If you're just holding on for the sake of holding on 'cause you can't bear to let her go, it's for you, not the kitty, and it's not fair to the 18 good healthy years she had with you, trusting you to do everything right.
Good luck, and I hope it's nothing serious.

You definitely need to take her to the vet tomorrow.

The vet will be able to tell you what's wrong. Not eating or drinking is a bad sign, but don't worry about a worst-cast scenario unless the vet tells you that's what it is. But definitely take her to the vet tomorrow.

You need to take her to the vet, as much as you don't want to it's best for her. It's quite posible it's something that can be healed, just need to be checked out. Like a Kidney infection. Don't think the worst of things, just ask your doctor why she's acting like this and it could possibly something he can fix! Good Luck :)

GO TO THE VET!!! She is suffering and starvation and lack of water will kill your cat --painfully. When the animal can not at or intake water--there is a serious issue. Trust me--

After two weeks of this, don't you think it's time to take her to the vet?
