"Shipment of firearms by common/contract carriers"

I think you can ship via US Post Office.

What is required to mail a shotgun or other firearm to a family member?

Handguns may be mailed by a licensed manufacturer or dealer of firearms or an authorized agent of federal government.

Although unloaded rifles and shotguns not precluded are mailable, mailers must comply with the Gun Control Act of 1968, Public Law 90-618, 18 USC 921, et seq., and the rules and regulations promulgated thereunder, 26 CFR 178, as well as state and local laws.

For further advice on mailing a specific item, you should contact:

* The nearest office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF)
* The Mailing Requirements area of your local Post Office™ facility.

(from the USPS office)

From the ATF Site:
(B8) May a nonlicensee ship a firearm by common or contract carrier? [Back]

A nonlicensee may ship a firearm by a common or contract carrier to a resident of his or her own State or to a licensee in any State. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun. In addition, Federal law requires that the carrier be notified that the shipment contains a firearm and prohibits common or contract carriers from requiring or causing any label to be placed on any package indicating that it contains a firearm.

[18 U.S.C. 922(a)(2)(A), 922(a) (3), 922(a)(5) and 922(e), 27 CFR 478.31 and 478.30]

Gotta love our nanny state. You have to be a damned lawyer to understand the regs. NOTE LICENSEE MEANS FFL LICENSED DEALER!!

When in doubt, have an FFL ship to an FFL acrossed state lines.

Heck, head up to CO ain't it time for vacation??

You need to simply find a local Gun-shop/Dealer near you son that will "receive" it. All you need do is get a copy of the shops FFL (Federal Firearms License) that they will provide you. You in turn pack the weapon up and ship it UPS along with the Dealer license copy and they UPS) keep the license photocopy for their records. The Dealer notifies your son and he picks it up.Simple...NOTE* DO NOT, repeat DO NOT write anywhere on the outside of the package to indicate that there is a handgun or weapon inside. Even UPS has some problems with employee theft.

UPS will only allow shipments of pistols between licensed firearm dealers, so if you use UPS you'll need to get a licensed firearm dealer (holder of a Federal Firearms License, AKA "FFL") in Texas to ship to a licensed firearm dealer in Colorado for your son to get it from.

You can ship the handgun via FedEx directly to your son if you are "shipping the handgun (or parts) to an FFL dealer (your son) for repair".

On the other hand, if both you and your son are capable of assembly and dis-assembly, you can disassemble the pistol and divide the parts into two (or more) shipments and ship only "machined parts" to your son.

However you choose to ship it (I encourage you to avoid the US Postal Service), I strongly suggest you purchase insurance with the shipper.

Good luck!

Yes, but you will have to use a FFL dealer and ship dealer to dealer. You'll pay anywhere from $15-$55 bucks on each end for this, and will still have to cover the shipping which will have to be next day. Call around to your local dealers and ask what they charge for a FFL transfer, and do the same for your son's zip code (if its a present, otherwise let him do the legwork). UPS will not just ship a gun without the proper documentation.

The sender and the reciever must posess a valid FFL" Federal Firearms Liscence". It's a pain in the rear to get one, so I suggest sending it from pawn shop to pawn shop. They will usually do it for a small fee.

No. If you are not a holder of a FFL you can only ship a handgun to the manufacturer (or their agent) for repair. Last I heard, UPS will no longer ship handguns to anyone. Your only option is pretty much Fedex, and you have to overnight it.

Otherwise, only an FFL holder can ship a handgun, and then it can only be to another FFL holder.

You can NOT ship handguns or ammunition through USPS.

Well, if it is a matchlock, flintlock, tape primer, pinfire or precussion firearm then you can ship it through normal mail. But I'm assuming that it is either rimfire or centerfire, and I believe those require special shipping!
