Speed. Lots of running back and forth in sprints. Not marathons but 20 yd sprints. Cutting side to side. Run a zig zag pattern. You have to change direction quickly. If the ball is stolen, you switch to defense immediately.

Upper body strength training workout. 15 reps, 3 times. Then 3 reps of the max weight you can lift.

Lower body-squats, lunges.

Mostly cardio. Those guys do an hour of cardio a day. It's important to have the stamina to last the whole game. If you don't do that, you can't make 35 pts a game. Doesn't matter how good you are if you can only run for 10 min at a time. Your heart has to be able to keep up. Jumping rope, running on the treadmill, bike riding--doesn't matter what you do as long as you hit that target heart rate. Most machines have a target heart rate monitor on it.

And none of that counts the time on the court working on the actual skills. Remember only Shaq was able to be in the NBA without knowing how to shoot a free throw. It's call "free" for a reason and if you can't get the free baskets, how good are you really? Height ain't everything--right Mugsy?--and it's something you can't even control.

A basketball player is fast and has good hand eye coordination. Consider things like handball that improve your reflex time and your hand-eye skill.

The NBA used Jordan as a marketing tool during his career and since then they (the fans ) have been looking for a new player that they can all get behind to be the face of the NBA. Also BC they both have the ability to take over a game and score pretty much at will against the other team.
