Or what type of ink (gel, water based, etc.) Yes, I want to write in my Bible and not in a seperate notebook or on post-its or use a highlighter, etc. so serious non-lecture type answers only.

I'm kind of looking for a nicer quality pen than your basic "bic". I also need a very fine tip to write very small. I won't be buying a new Bible with different paper, this one was a gift.

I usually just use whatever pen I am carrying.. and buy a new Bible every so often.. the pens never bleed too much unless you are using a fat marker of some kind...
Edit: OH.. hmmm.. but then I normally use a Gel pen.

Buy a different version of the bible with better paper. Bic shouldn't bleed through as the above suggested.

Thinner pages mean delicate printing, and slimmer size, often an indication of a higher priced Bible. If you like that version, find a less expensive edition with heftier paper, it's more likely to hold up to note and references that you write, and you can treat it more like a workbook. Use a fine-point ball pen with black or blue-black ink, and write lightly.

Yeah use Bic, I wrote all kinds of funny stuff in my bible (when I used to read it).
It didn't bleed though.

I use a ball point in various colours. I also have coloured pencils that do great to underline verses or segments of verses.
I would go to your local Christian book store and inquire there. I too write in my Bible, it was a gift from my family!
