I have to disagree with storytimemommy up there. I was spanked as a child and I have no emotional problems, I am close to my parents, and have never done drugs. Every spanking I got was because I done something I shouldn't have. I'm not scared of my parents and never was I was just scared of making them mad and that's the problem with some of today's kids. They don't fear getting in trouble with their parents because the worst that will happen is a week without the tv.....ooooo what punishment. If that's all that my parents would have done I would prolly have gotten in a lot more trouble as a kid and a teen. I believe in spanking when necessary but only when nothing else works. Today if you spank your kids it's "child abuse" and I believe that is not true. There is that line of spanking and being abusive but an open handed swat on the butt, never killed anyone and doesn't leave a bruise.

Oh they do, it's just that there are anti spanking nut cases all over the place who are willing to call the police at seeing parents raise their children differently then they do. Forget the fact that spanking is VERY legal in the US and Canada, to them is complete and total child abuse.
So parents (myself included) spank behind closed doors. Even if the anti spanker's weren't a issue, we still would only use spanking behind closed doors, IMO that's where they belong.

Not only do we (husband and I) spank, all of my family does, and most of my neighbors do. I also know parents that actually started spanking their children due to how impressed they were with our daughters attitude.

Just parents spanking isn't the issue. It's more so on HOW, and WHEN they spank that's important. For example, I'll take a non spanker over someone who just wallops the living daylights out of their children, during a fit of anger. I can't stand baring witness to a parent yanking the child by the arm, and whacking away. To me that is teaching a child to hit, and is also teaching anger.

Many people don't believe in it anymore because they've found more productive and positive ways to discipline and guide there children. Some don't spank because they're afraid to discipline at all. Depends on who you ask. Me, I like the non-physical methods much better, and find them to have a very positive effect on my daughter and family.

I have 2 acquaintances who spank their children (age 4 & 5) and although they're adorable little girls, I hate going anywhere with them because their behavior is completely out of control - right up until mom's hand raises up. Meanwhile my kid is looking at me wondering WTH is wrong with this picture. In my personal experience their children don't show them respect until right before it's time for an ***-whooping. And I can't stand to see that.

Most of my friends do not spank.

Society has made parents afraid to spank their children. They have been told that it causes not only physical harm but emotional harm. Also, they are afraid that someone might report them for child abuse. I was spanked as a child and I feel that I turned out to be a well adjusted member of society. I am happy with myself and my family. I was very close to both my mother and father. I spank my children, but only when they need an attitude adjustment. I use other methods of discipline for other things. But I am not afraid to give them a couple of swats on the bottom if needed. That's why there is padding on the bottom. However, I do it in private, never in public or in front of other family members.

Well, when I used to see the fear in my ten year olds sons eyes, when I attempted to spank him that's when I realized that it does not work. And as a parent I felt extremely guilty and could not live with myself. I know that some children perhaps could use a spanking but talking to your child in a authoritarian voice and letting them know what they did wrong works better than that spanking.

I don't spank, but it seems as if everyone else does. I don't judge other people, but my reasons for doing it are this...
I couldn't imagine physically harm my small, defenseless child.
It almost seems barbaric to me.
Studies have proven it to cause resentment and other bad side effects in teenagers.
I am more creative.
I don't want my child to hit others, so I am setting an example.

Those are a few of my reasons for not spanking my extremely well behaved child. I practice a theory called love and logic. It really is an awesome theory that works great with children. Here is a site for others to read about it.

I have spanked my childen, in the proper manor, and now I don't spank them anymore. My youndest is seven so he is outgrowing that but my oldest, I would say I stopped spanking when he was 5. I think spanking can and should be used as punishment but done in the right way with the right attitude.

honestly i believe in a good old fashion spanking but the problem with it is, in todays society you are not allowed to spank your children. i feel if we were able to spank our children we wouldn't have half of these little punks who don't know right from wrong running around all over the place! where i live, it is illegal to spank your children at all! i almost got arrested for spanking my child a while ago and i didn't leave any marks on him at all! a long time ago you used to be able to spank them 3 times on the butt with an open hand but you can't even do that anymore. all i can say is florida's justice system is so screwed up, i wish i could move out of florida because of it!

I believe in spanking, I've just never found it to be necessary for my kids. I know LOTS of people who spank, many more than I know who don't.
