do you use it loosely or do you reserve these words for someone special? do you mean it when you say it? why or why not?

Its because love is such a general, vague word, and there are different kinds. When you say "I love my mom", or "I love my partner", those are (hopefully!) two totally different kinds of love, but both valid nontheless. To say you love chocolate may be equally valid. Its because they are different sorts of love. I mean, the greeks had four words for love: agape, which is selfless love; eros for sexual/romantic love; storge for love of an object or thing, and philia for brotherly, familial love. Even these probably dont cover it all. So when you say i love ____, you can really be saying loads of different things! Its used loosely because its a loose word

I do use the term loosely, but I understand the varying meanings behind it each time I use it. I think it is understood that when I say I love my dog that is not to be considered equal to the expression, "I love my mother." I think there was a good reason why, in the Greek language, there were different terms for the different types of love. For example, philia meaning brotherly love, eros meaning passionate love, etc.

So, essentially, when I say "I love chocolate," I obviously really mean "I like chocolate a great deal." However, it is much more of a pain to say "I like chocolate a great deal" than it is to say "I love chocolate" while I myself and others understand the implied meaning behind it.

i agree with you that love is used so loosely. there are different types of love, though. "eros", or sexual love, the type you'd feel for your husband/wife/boyfriend/girlfriend, and "agape" which is the love you'd feel for you mum and dad, your best friend or your dog. i don't think it's possible to love an inanimate object such as a bar of chocolate or a cup of coffee because it doesn't have feelings and won't love you back. i always mean it when i tell someone i love them.
i also think hate and sorry are words that are used far too loosely. people say they hate someone they've never even met, and some people say sorry for everything and it doesn't mean anything.

I love this question!!!! I don't think I would love chocolate in the same way as I would love a girlfriend. Nor would I love my cat the way I love my parents. Love is a relative term. How many times have you said you HATE something, or someone when you actually diddn't?

Hey there are many types of love i love family and my friends in different ways
Love is when you you care so much about someone that it affect u. when they're sad your sad, when they are happy you are happy.
I love everyone including ppl i never met. B/C its overrated its an emotion of care.
Its not dying for someone or something like that its jsut pure emotion, not physical, ideal, political, or spiritual its what makes life worth living if u dont live in love then u dont live

I tell my friends I love them everyday...because I do and I never want to miss a chance to say it. You're right though. You should save the word for when you truely mean it. I love you should be cherished.

I totally agree with MsB2U! There are many different meanings to love. but I do beleive people should say it with more meaning. like, "i love that top", they dont want to marry it do they? no. then why not say "like". u r right it is kinda annoying. lol
