Fear is a bigger motivator than joy any day. God loves you.

This seems to be a "Generational" question.

I have meet with elderly people (60's, 70', 80's, & 90's) and they seem to be motivated by "Hell" ... and share many stories about "Hell" from their childhood.

Somewhere during the "Hippie" revolution (1960's) culture drastically switched child teachings. So "Moon-child" was taught to "Love" and strive for heaven rather than to fear "Hell." This drastic cultural switch has almost wiped out "Hell" from most peoples knowledge in today's culture.

I think that the penjulium swung too far, and this has resulted in few accepting "Hell" which can be a very dangerious situation for them. Actually, "Sin" is a dirty word too ... when in fact, it "Sin" means to move away from God's plan. Some people freak major and hear sin and get defensive. Again, it's that "Hippie" love and refusal to punish but only "Self-sooth" that much of our socity is plagued with.

Pope John Paul II says that we need to fear Hell but not to let this fear parallize us counterbalancing it with Heaven.

I wont lie and say hell doesnt scare me or that heaven doesnt sound awesome but the main reason for my motivation is simply having a relationship with God.It has saved me from depression as well as other things. I cant live without God and believe me I have tried but in the end despite some bad stuff that has happened and continues to happen in my life I am just not happy and at peace without him. God is very personal and I love Him. Thats my motivation.

My love for my Lord.
I have never had a fear of hell. I don't know why,I just haven't.
I would live my life for Jesus even if there was no heaven, but I am sure going to like it when I get there.

Home Sweet Home !

Neither - I am motivated simply by wanting to get it right and rewarded by not having regrets and feeling a sense of serenity.

It should be reward over fear, but it is not always the case. We are to have a healthy fear of God though.

There were two men who died...each having lived a sinless life.
Both men were presented to the Lord for discernment.
The Lord turned to the first man and asked him how it
came to be that he lived all his life without sinning.
The man replied "Because I feared your judgment and the
penalties of sin.”
The Lord replied, "Well done, my good and faithful servant.
You have earned a place in my kingdom.”
The Lord turned to the second man and asked, "How is
it that you lived a sinless life?"
The second man replied, "Because of a love of righteousness".
The Lord then said, "Well done my SON...come and follow me."
....And the second man became a God.

The fear of Hell. Come on spending eternity worshiping The Invisible Friend? Spare me if I believed I rather spend eternity with hot men, who are former Mensa members, and being fed chocolate.

I'll opt for the drive up the middle and go for what's behind door #3- truth and understanding. These motivate me. I don't believe in God for what I might get out of it when that age comes.
