I am just curious. I have so many friends getting engaged, and have seen so many people get married, and everybody seems to think that a decent ring costs 1000 bucks or more. What's a decent price or how much should they cost?

The cost of an engagement ring really depends on your budget. You can get a decent ring in any price range, but will it be THE ring, that depends. A lot of brides want THE ring and once you account for a 1 carat stone and the platinum band - the price gets up in the 5-8k range. The cut of the stone, the color, clarity and size are also factors in determining the cost. Take a look at www.bluenile.com - they have an interactive site that explains what each C stands for and what you should look for in a stone.

are you talking about an engagement ring or a wedding band, or both?

in many situations, an engagement ring with be the more flashy of the two, and will have a diamond, and so a nice ring with a good quality diamond (even a tiny one) will start in the 1000+ range.

wedding bands, on the other hand, are commonly more simple, consisting of pure metal (gold, platinum, whatever) or many smaller diamonds, and the ring doesn't cost nearly as much as the engagement ring.

all of this said, this is just my opinion! there is never a "should" when it comes to spending money on a ring. a guy (or girl) "should" spend what they can afford, period.

I agree with Lydia. I was actually looking at them with my best friend online. There are some very nice rings for 300 or less that would be perfect for me. I looked up engagement rings and wedding rings on the yahoo search. There were many to look at and cheap to the budget. It is up to you and what you like and what the guy can afford. I liked some that were about 300 dollars. My friend said that is because they were 10 ct instead of 14 ct which are better. I wouldn't care. It is a symbol after all. You can't take it with you when you are gone from earth.

It all depends on where they shop. If most shop at a jewelry store they are going to spend a lot more. My ring is a 3 stone blue topaz with diamond accents cuz I wanted a gemstone instead of a diamond. We bought it while on sale for 75% off and paid less than $100. I saw the same ring at a jewelry store, it was exactly the same ring, and it was priced at $700, which was twice than the original price at the store we purchased mine at. I think if you are going to shop at a jewelry store and want at least a one carat diamond of quality you have to expect to pay close to $1000.

I think what matters is if you are happy with the ring. I recently got engaged and I found an awesome estate ring at an obscure jewelry store for about 700 dollars. It's unique, beautiful, and I don't think I could have found one that I like better- but to me there are other things I would like to spend my money on. I have to admit that the one that I found at the store before it would have cost closer to about 1,500. I think a lot of it depends on where you are shopping too.

The engagement ring might desire to value what the shopper can cope with to pay for. 2 months revenues is a made up thought via a merchandising and marketing company to get adult adult males to spend extra on a diamond - - it has no foundation in the real worldwide. My wedding ceremony ring has aquamarine stones in it, no longer diamonds. yet I do see alot of girls figuring out on diamond eterinty bands for his or her wedding ceremony rings. the marriage ring is many times very low priced - - around $one hundred to $2 hundred for a undeniable band and extra if there are stones.

You aren't going to believe this but my husbamd amd I purchased our 18K white gold rings for $40 (combined). We were married in March and purchased our rings right after Valentines day, so there was a huge sale.

And for everyone that thinks they aern't real. We had the rings appraised and they are in fact 18 K white gold.

I would say a reasonable amount is about $200-$400. Depending on your taste.

A simple setting without a diamond should cost at least $250.

A nice 1/2 carat diamond cost will cost $1000+. Regardless of size you want a diamond that appears white (color), has fire (cut), and eye clean (clarity).

With carat this is the 4 C's.

There IS no SHOULD! Usually, it's what the guy can comfortably afford, without going into debt or buying on credit. There are totally lovely rings of diamonds and gold available for $100 and up! Hopefully, the woman will accept happily what the man has chosen for her, and realize the symbolism of the ring....

You can get sets for $300 to $400 if you like smaller diamonds. Sometimes you get lucky and find a ring that has been discontinued and they only have a few left for up to 50% off. I happen to like smaller diamonds with more diamonds on the band than just one big gaudy diamond. You get bigger than 1 carat and it is too big and gaudy. Seems stupid to me to pay $1000 or more for a ring when you have bills to pay and food to buy and a roof to put over your head.
