I glance at the persons eyes for a second. Eye contact shows self confidence, acknowledgment of that person, and also it can tell you if the hello how are you is just a casual hello or someone or a friend that actually may be needing a show of respect at that time. On the down side eye contact can be a hint of the kind of person he/she is and their intentions, sometimes not a good thing....so yes...I look if only for a second. If someone doesnt make eye contact with me, it does say alot about that persons feelings either toward me or about themselves. As a female, I prefer eye contact from a male. If you are looking at my lips, I may get the impression that you are looking below my lips....which would be offensive and disrespectful. Sorry. Remember...its all in the eyes!

I would think that looking at the mouth is pretty common. I read once that we actually do a fair amount of lip-reading when talking to people, so watching someone's mouth would help with that a lot. I think it would be considered polite, or maybe just confident and intimate, to glance at their eyes sometimes. Too much eye to eye contact is creepy unless it's between lovers, but a bit is often preferred.

My husband does that too and he's not weird (at least I don't think so). I think you should try to look people in the eye while they are speaking to you or vice versa, but you don't have to do it the entire time. That's rude in itself. It's creepy too. Just make a few attempts, and you should be okay. Just don't look away too quickly, 'cause it might seem that you're nervous about something. If you find it impossible, just tell people (if they ask) that you are a little hard of hearing and it helps to watch their lips move in order for you to understand them completely.

I look at their eyes because it's said that the eyes are the window to the soul. Plus by the way the eyes shift you can tell if they are lieing. People who don't hear well watch the mouth to see what people are saying. But maybe there are other reasons.

I think it depends on the setting. In a more formal setting, eye contact indicate attentiveness. Even in a formal setting soft eye contact may be viewed as less intimidating and may be preferred over more intense eye contact.
With a setting that is informal, eye contact may or not be necessary. Looking at someone's mouth may not be viewed as offensive since you are playing close attention to the words spoken.

I work in a very noisy environment, and I too have to look at peoples mouths in order to under stand what they are saying. I too feel I am being rude by not looking them in the eyes. I always hear a little voice in the back of my head saying, "show some respect, look me in the eyes when I talk to you", and I recall teachers telling us its important to do this as well. I say - Look at your fingernails when you talk to people - this always makes you look like you're superior.

I find myself looking at their mouth too, when I feel as though I am staring too much I would look away then back to their mouth again, maybe it's because the words comes from there, I think.

I have trouble maintaining eye contact when I am speaking to someone. Look between the person's eyebrows, they can't tell the difference.
I hard that you look at someones mouth if you are attracted to him or her. Don't know if that is true though.

In a one on one situation it's eye contact.
People who can't look me in the eye seem
like they're hidding something.
If I'm watching t.v, and mine's a 54 incher,
I tend to watch their mouths for some reason.
Not all the time. Maybe because their mouth
is 8 inches long on my set!! kidding!

When I am talking to one person or a group of people, I try to make eye-contact. If I'm making a speech, i actually look over people's heads to avoid staring at one person.
