Here's the long and short of your question....

As a law enforcement officer in missouri I can only answer this for my state...

In the state of MO you can purchase a firearm(rifle or shotgun) the same day. you must complete a federal and state firearms background check papers. The paperwork is immediately sent to the background checkers, who will issue a decision immediatly or if there really busy within a few hours(over the phone). If your wanting to purchase a handgun a 48 hr wait is mandatory with a more extensive background check being done. Now as for licenses, you don't have to have one unless your planning on carrying the weapon concealed. But since your planning on just keeping it in a case for transport to firearms range(unloaded) your not violating any laws. you don't have to havea license to own or transport a firearms as long as your above the age of 18 and the weapon is unloaded during transport.
