I think a cairn terrier would be good for your 11 yr old . i love cairn terriers I had one for 11 yrs and she was the best dog and they are fiercely loyal too . good luck and look them up on the akc website .

Get a yorkie!
No shedding
Non allergy
If you don't encourage barking, they don't bark!
If you don't ever allow them to start running off...they don't..but God help you if you do :0)
The best part? Every yorkie I have ever known follows their owner..and I mean if you are on chair A and get up...move to chair B...then stand right back up and go upstairs...then to the bathroom...then to the kitchen...that dog will follow you the entire time!
Don't get a pug..they snore. It's cute for about a minute. Plus they feel like a fat, hairy sausage.
Don't get a beagle, they stink. I know..blah blah about one person's non-stinky beagle..they stink.
Don't get a doxie...they really bark. So do chis...and they are super fragile. So are poms.
I just read your PS...you need to really ASK chi owners about that yapping. They yap. Plus, are fragile. Plus they shiver..eeeew. Plus, the worst part? They bite new people. Ask the pound which little dogs yap or bite the most..they will say a chi. I know it!

I would say a chuhauhau, they are really small but they are esay, you never have to take it for walks only like once a year, and very short walks, they dont eat much and so you save on food. OR a toy poodle, they are so cute and loving and small, they love to cuddle and be next to you. So hope this helps!

You should look up your local Animal Shelters or Humane Societies. You can find exactly what you are looking for, for very little money. They usally come with all there shots for the first year and already spayed or netured. hsmo.org is a good one to go too.

You should get a pug. My friend just got one and she loves her. They dont bark a lot, their friendly, they have short hair so they dont shed much and i think their cute. Also, they like to sit with you, my friends pug sleeps right next to her all night.
