just wondering what my fellow medics and firefighters around the country and the world see. what are the worst calls that you have run, the ones that left a permanent imprint on you and how you do the job.
personally one of my worst calls was to a child locked in the car with the windows rolled up. it was well into the 90's outside, well the inside of a car with black leather interior got much, much hotter, in fact so hot that the 3 year old twin boys died before anyone even noticed that they were in the car. this occured in a shopping place parking lot, the mother apparently did not want to wake the sleeping boys when she and her older daughter went to the grocery store and the than popped by the toy store. from what witnesses say the car had been in the parking lot for almost an hour when we came and the mother didnt come around for another 1/2 hour.
it was a particularly bad call for me because my son was 3 at that time and these little boys reminded me so much of my own kid.

i had a call like yours once. it was a 6 month old left unattended in a car. we were removing the child from the seat when part of his arm just sloughed off in my partners hands. there were a lot of other nasty details that i'm going to leave out. in the last 10 years i've seen all manner of injury and death to the point where nothing really bothers me anymore.

I have been a FF/1st Responder for over 12 years. There are 3 seperate calls that I still wake up from in the middle of the night. The first one happened one night in a 2 vehicle accident. We responded and when we got on scene there was a vehicle in the ditch on its top.The female driver was DOA.The dad came driving up to the scene looking for her(will explain in detail). He stopped at the top of the hill and came walking down to the scene. The Troopers on scene noticed him coming down the hill and stopped him directly behind me(I was operating the Rescue Truck) and delivered the message to him about his daughter.I found out that she would call her parents whenever she was leaving to come home and she would say she would be home in say 20mins. and she was always on time. This night she called and say she would be home in 25 mins and when she wasnt home an hour later her dad came out looking for her and came across the accident. The ME also said that she was the worst 2 car accident victim he had seen.
# 2. I was with the same department at the time. The fence that seperates the neighbors property from mine is also the boundry line for that department and another one.Well the other department was dispatched to a shooting at 7am.I knew the address was about 5 miles from my house in the other district so I went ahead since it was so close.Upon entering the house I found a 6 or 7 y/o boy DOA from a gunshot to the head.I wont go into anymore detail on that one.
#3 I ended up joining the other department.I was taking a trailer back to a friends house when they dispatched us for a 2 vehicle accident on the interstate.I was close to the station so I p/u the Rescue Truck and took it to the scene. When I got on scene there were 2 vehicles with very heavy damage.I was told that in the first vehicle there was 2 kids DOA and that the other vehicle had an elderly lady DOA.The impact was so severe that the elderly lady died instantly and the driver of that vehicle was more than likely going to start crashing as soon as we got all of the pressure of him.As we started extricating him he started crashing but we had enough people there that he was stabilized and transported by one of the 3 helicopters we had sitting on the interstate. The mother in the other vehicle was also stabilized and transported by helicopter.
Those are the 3 that still get to me to this day.

well my worst calls have dealt with children i had a 16 year old dive in a car school bus accident, i have had a 9 year old fall into a bond fire and just some others along those type of things but all in all most of your worst calls will be car accidents and child calls. but there are some very rewarding parts too like if you ever get a chance to deliver a baby or just be able to comfort some one in need that has lost there home on the EMS side of things now firefighting wise the worst thing i have to say would have to be house fires where some one is trapped and there is no way to get to them or car incidents where children have been involved but i have seen alot and i have been doing firefighting for 4 years and EMS for 2 going on 3 but all in all its what the person or provider feels most comfortable in and that very's from provider to provider

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2574232109 Trylooking at some of these calls, some are funny, some are not. I am still fairly new in the EMS world, and unfortunately have not responded to any serious calls. My luck has it that whenever I am on call, nothing happens. Sadly, I know that when the day does come, it's gonna be huge. I worry about it. And my biggest fear of working EMS is to need to respond to something involving a child.

I work in an emergency room in northern wisconsin. We have a lot of amish people up here and they like to be secluded. This amish guy was wheeled in because he got mulled by a mule and he fell into a manure spreader that the mule was pulling. He had cuts all over his body and they were covered in manure. The doctors had to clean his wounds several times and it was a pretty mainful process.

That's a terrible call to have to respond to. Anytime a child or someone who has no control or understanding of the situation (patients with dementia, mentally challenged, etc) is involved it's always much harder to deal with. No one ever feels as bad for someone who was on drugs or drunk and takes themselves out without injuring others.
I have so much respect for first responders. You guys do the jobs the rest of us are afraid to do. You don't get paid enough for it. I'm an EEG Tech, so I rarely see the really bad stuff.
