I have just returned home from meeting with a Navy recruiter in my town, and he gave me a great deal of information on the Navy and all of its perks and whatnot, and how it could help me become a pharmacist later on. He was extremely persuasive and got me seriously thinking about joining, but I would like y'alls opinions on the Navy. Seeing as how he is in the Navy, his views are going to be biased in favor of it. I would just like y'all's views on the Navy--its pros *and* cons.

By the way, I'm 17 and will be a senior this year.

Thank you!

I am currently serving in the Navy. There are alot of good things. For one you get TA (Tuition Assistance) for school and the pay is ok. In order to become a pharmacist assistant which is what you would do if you were to pursue that career make sure the recruiter has it guaranteed in your contract if you do it because the school is backed up right now. You would have to become a Hospital Corpsman first and then go to pharm tech school but its worth it because of the certifications you get in the civilian world. There are a lot of travel opportunities and money to make when you make rank. The only cons to me are the distance from love ones and not always being able to do exactly as you want all the time. I am currently a pharm tech myself in the Navy.

If you do sign up make sure if you have college credits they give you a bonus for that and that you get pharmacy school guaranteed in your contract. Ask about the Navy college fund also. Here's a website to help you if you need more info.

Been in 11 years. Love the job more than I did then. That being said you need to watch the recruiter. Do not sign anything until you have read it carefully. If you do not want to be chipping paint all the time (everyone paints in the Navy.....your job determines how much) or sweating bullets on a flight deck do not sign anything with the term "apprentice training" or undesignated. These are the terms used to sell jobs that while important have no "A" school and long hard work hours. If you wish to be a pharmacist in the navy have the school guaranteed in your contract. That school might require that you be an E-4 before you are eligible, not sure though as I am not a corpsman. Be warned they are looking more at males for the job of Hospital corpsman as they can be stationed with Marine combat units.

If you are serious about joining the military I say go for it but also remember that there are other branches of service out there. As far as the Navy, it is the best if you like to be away from home for long periods of time and get to see the world. The Army or the Ar Force would be a better choice if you like stability and staying in one place for a while. Here is something else to think of about the Navy, you are basically trapped on a floating city. If you ever feel the need to just get away there is only so far you can go.

It can be a great start to life with out your parents, life away from home. It is by all means not easy but it is not the hardest thing you will do in your life. As far as the start to a career, well that is all in what you pick as your job. Make sure that what ever you pick you can find your self doing in the future. If you want to become a Pharmacist then this can be a good deal for you.

There was someone else here that talked about the Airforce paying better, no all braches pay the same. It all depends on your rank, but it is a good idea to go out and talk to all the branches, each has something unique to offer you.

I just want to say that in these days with the state of the world and all our govement involment in world politics, that it is very mature of you to think about the military, just make sure you do it for the right reasons: to serve your nation. Dont do it for the money or the hopes that it will pay for your school in the future. That is just a benifit of it, not a reason to do so.

The recruiter is a salesman, if you want to be a pharmacist go to college, if you like working 16 hours a day and spending half a year at least at Sea, join the Navy. You can also try to get in the Naval Academy, become an officer and be a pharmacist for the Navy.

My son was in the Navy for 6 years and he liked it. He did 2 deployments to the Gulf. He got out because of no advancement opportunity at the time. He has used the aid for college and has done well. My brother and his wife were both 20 years+ in the Navy so I would say they were happy with it. Both are out now with a pension and still young.
