I would check with your local fish and game, a local university, or the CDC. I know that a couple of years ago, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, in conjunction with the CDC and UGA were asking people to seal them up in zip-loc bags and mailing them in for research. If you don't want to go through that, flushing them works, too.

Burn it with a match or propane cigarette lighter.....The flame kills the tick along with any bacteria it carries.Saving it to take to a Doctor/Lab for testing is a total waste of time and money unless you have been bitten and the bite area becomes red or a rash develops......Labs don't normally test the tick itself for lyme disease anyway. If you think about it what would be the point of testing the tick in the first place? What would you do with the results? That's why they test the bite victims.Lyme disease cannot be cured, medicine can only treat the symptoms but not the disease......

When you remove the tick, take it in your index finger and thumb place it in a pair of tweezers and get you a lighter, or match, and cold it up to the tick, listen very carefully as you burn it, listen for a little popping noise, ticks have a very tough thick skin, the heat causes them to burst, and it tells you that they are dead!

k I'm really in to outdoor sports hunting etc. if you have a tick take a leather-man(or just pliers or hell hands would work) but once its off take a light or match and burn it that's the only true way to make sure its killed and ur rite a hammer probably isn't the best way just to be safe :-)

I usually just cut them in half with my fingernail. When I am picking them off my dogs I will stick them on a long needle and burn them all.
For all the people who say flush it; wrong answer. Ticks can swim.

A) Flush it.

If its not filled with blood....

B) Burn it.

C) Cut it in half with your pocket knife

D) Crush it between your finger nails.

They aren't immortal creatures, you don't need a hammer, and stop worrying about germs unless its filled with blood already, in which case just flush it!

Flushing is easy

I personally like to burn them with a lighter. They will give out a nice little pop when they explode and that gives me the satisfaction of knowing I got even with the little prick ; )

don't worry about germs. take it to the doctors and they can test to see if it has Lyme disease. if you don't want to check it, then either wrap it in toilet paper and flush it or burn it. burning it gives you the satisfaction that you know its dead and it wont harm anyone or anything else.

wrap it in toilet paper and flush it
or if u dont want to waste the few gallons of water put it into the toilet with just a piece of toilet paper over it, this way it dies, u dont have to see it, and you save water.

Flatten it with your thumbnail on a hard surface, then nail its carcass to a tree as a warning to the other tics.
