Both online and in person.
Never apply for a credit card from an online credit card "clearinghouse" website.
When applying online, always apply on the credit card companies site.

Walk in at my bank (Chase)
Filled out an application. Since it was the first time and i had no credit file, they needed other supporting documents which i provided and 30days later, i have been pre-approved with $200 spending limit.

I got mine through Wamu they mailed me an application at the time I was a customer.

i use my credit union's debit card...doesnt mess up your credit like credit cards do
