if your dog still enjoys life, then s/he is not ready to be put down. if they are in pain, have lost their appetite, talk to your vet. when the times comes, you will know.
as for cost, it varies widely depending on where you are, whether you have insurance... talk to your vet.

Yes. My mother had us put her black lab down simply because she (the dog) had off days when she'd be limping around. It was a wonderful dog but was a totally outside dog (got scared when she was infrequently brought indoors and didn't know about not pooping/peeing inside). It was ugly because the vet couldn't find a vein and kept poking the needle in all the dog's legs and then it took the dog a very long time to finally die. My sister had to have an old malemute down, the dog had been found along the highway and had kidney disease, obviously someone didn't want to pay to have the dog put down so just released it. Dog was incontinent and deaf and my sister gave it the best for as long as the dog seemed to want to live but at some point it became obvious the dog wasn't happy, had no "up" days and was probably suffering. Your dog, if there isn't any physical reason, is probably suffering from depression and stress from losing his original owner and probably will never get over it.

What kind of dog do you have and how old is it? I would a few of the tell signs are, blindness, breathing problems, not able to walk with out problems, not able to eat or drink easily, if he or she seems to be in pain, you know your dogs normal behavior, if it has changed over the past months or two and is keeping the same or getting worse then it may be time to let them go. As for the cremation, you will need to check with your vet, they can refer you to a crematory that will be able to help you.

This is a tough subject. I had a 12 year old german shepard/lab mix and although she seemed "happy" she had a lot of trouble walking and other old age issues. Prior to her, my family had a dog that, after, watching her deteriorate, finally put her down. That went on for about 3 years... we just didn't want to let her go, but looking back, I wish we had speared her the last couple of years, I know they were miserable for her. I didn't want to put my other dog through that when I saw her on the same path as the other one. It's really sad, watching living beings fall apart. Fortunately we, as responsible pet owners have the power to prevent much of the old age suffering animals can and do go through. I hope that my current "babies" will go on their own when their time comes, but if I feel that I need to help them, I will.

does the dog look relatively calm, and happy, or it it in pain. if the dog looks find, and not like it is in pain, i would let it die peacefully, and i would stay with it to let it know that it was loved, and it is ok to leave the earth. if the dog starts looking like it is in pain, put it down.cremation costs between 150-350 depending on size and place
Hope i helped

If your dog looks miserable or hurt i would put it to sleep. It would cost $150 to about $350, it all depends what size your dog is. .
