Me, personally: I have found that I am happier as an atheist because I am free to follow my own spiritual path not bound by religious dogma or docrtine. I am happy knowing that I strive to be good person because I WANT to be and not because I am told that I should be or because of fear. I am happier knowing that I continue to search for the truth and that knowledge empowers me instead of restricts me.

For those of you who are former Christians, like myself, how have you found that you are happier as an atheist?

It's not that I'm "happier" as an atheist, really. In fact, I'll readily concede that ignorance is bliss - or, as the "Christians" phrase it, "If you're happy and you know it clap your hands!"

There are definite reasons why the God-crutch continues to be so popular in this day and age, LONG after we should've all recognized it for the vestige of primitive savagery that it is.

However, if you agree that self-delusion is never a good thing, then it's impossible to regret having given up that crutch.

All this is really aside from the fact that Christianity in particular is a religion of morbid sexual neurotics. It's true that the "sin" idea adds a little extra punch to one's sex life, but this is obviously a perversion. It's much more wholesome to enjoy sex for what it is - and to leave your neighbors to do the same - without obsessing over whether "God" approves.

I've always been a happy person.
I don't think I'm any happier now, but being happy isn't a reason to be an atheist. People join religions to try and find happiness. People become atheist when they begin to understand. It may or may not make them happy, but that doesn't stop it from being true.

this is amazingly sturdy whilst an atheist does that. And particular, an substantial style of Christians do have a project doing that, so ate up of their "ethical time table". Even non secular homeless shelters will shrink back human beings for being gay, this is horrific. The Salvation military won't hire gay human beings. i'm continuously reluctant to furnish to charities simply by fact of ways they might cope with somebody who's gay or transgendered in the event that they got here for help. simply by fact I surely have been in that project myself. we want greater homeless shelters/charities that at the instant are not in reaction to faith.

It's not about being happier. It's about being honest with myself. Truth be told, I was happy as a Christian. But it was the happiness of ignorance (I didn't know any other way, I'm not saying Christians are necessarily ignorant). The honesty has made me respect myself alot more though.

:) I believe in God, but I'm quite similiar to you. I somewhat broke the belief of sin, and I don't bind myself to one doctrine or Church. And I, like you, try to be a good person, and I take the ideals of how or what a good person is, from every faith i find :) For example my beliefs are majorly Christianity, Taoism, and Buddhism, and some of others. I take most of the God aspect from Christianity, and then the philosophies (like that of the Tao) from the others.

Most but not all Atheists are very angry people. There was once a town here in America where the townsfolk abandoned religion. They said they would be an example to the world. And that the "evils" of religion would never again plague their town. They stated that free thinking and happiness would rule them. Guess what happened to that town??? Robbery and murder rates doubled or tripled from the previous year in 1 year!!! Rape sky-rocketted also. Violent crime also rose by almost 200%!!! Yeah, they were an example to the world alright.

Very well said! The Christians always say they are happier, but they always have such worried looks on their faces and seem so upset. They always refer to me like I'm suffering the fires of brimstone and they are here to save me. Its very insulting.

i am a former christian, currently agnostic.

its a lot less stressful not having the feeling of this almighty being looking over your shoulder at everything you do. this being who created you and is disappointed in your imperfections. this being who demands perfection for his "unconditional love". and lastly, i do not hold any false hopes (in prayers or in god) anymore. i am less likely to be disappointed in the end.

It's really difficult to explain...I feel like I broke up with an abusive girlfriend the same day I quit my job that kept promising to pay me but never did.

Much like yourself, it gives me satisfaction to know that I strive to be a good person because I want to be as well.
