My 7 year old dauther will have one tooth extracted because it is obstructing. The dentist said she will use laughing gas. No anestheologist will be present. Is laughing gas considered general anesthesia? How safe is it on a 7 year old? Should I go ahead with it?

The doctor would be the one to answer these questions. He/she deals with children all the time.

No actually it isn't. There was a huge story in Chicago about a dentist who killed a four year- old girl by using too much laughing gas and medication on her. Be very careful about what the dentist puts in your daughter's system. There bodies can't handle most of the drugs that dentists use. Ask him if he has an alternative or if there is anyway that she can be awake so that they can monitor her breathing. I don't mean to scare you, but that story sticks out in my mind because of the very drug that you just mentioned.

No don't go ahead with it, in the uk most dentists stopped using gas quite a few years ago, there were a few deaths from it, I had it quite a bit as a child but dentists just dont use it anymore, if they need to put you to sleep to work on your teeth they now refer you to hospital. Ask your dentist to use sedation, I had this recently and it was fantastic, for follow ups they gave me children's sedation, a small mask was placed over my nose, and i inhaled a strawberry smelling gas, which just made me very calm, I knew exactly what was going on, they gave me the usual injection, and I was fine, no pain, no worries, it was great.

it is fine it doesn't hurt them at all. It just relaxes them it has no long term effects. She will be a little high for a while and act funny but it will past soon after leaveing the dentist. Unless your daughter is very patient its the best way for dental work. If you;ve ever done something like pot its kind of what she will be feeling but without any tripping effect.

yeah go ahead with it! obviously if the dentist said thats what they are gonna do then its safe, they are doctors too you know. I dont think it really matters how old you are as long as their not using too much or too little. well, it might not be good for a baby but what ever. go along with it im sure that she will be fine. GOOD LUCK to you daughter! hope that i helped you!
