There are young adults who are giving up life to just live in their own apartments. I say apartments cause they can not afford any houses.Giving up life like no living to feel free always on the go and always needing to be somewhere like another job. Is this what America is protecting from the illegal immigrants? Could the govenment not cut their budgets more and allow some of the monies to go to higher wages for legal citizens?

It is difficult to live on that low an income, however compared to other countres our poor would be the envy of them. We ma not be able to afford a house but we have cable tv and cars and computers. Most of the world doesn't have any of those.

To answer the question, the answer is no. For one reason, you can't really live on $5.15/hr in America anymore unless you're living with your parents, your boyfriend or girlfriend, three other roommates, or your just really, really cheap. I've a had a low wage job before and I know how you feel. It's a feeling like your stuck and can't move forward or back. Most times in those type of jobs you have to work insane hours to make ends meet. All I can say to you is that at some point in your life, you won't be working a crappy job that makes that much money. Living in an apartment is not giving up on a house either. I made a decision to move into an apartment last year for two reasons: I am 28 years old and I don't need to live with my parents anymore, and the other reason is I have to see for myself what I can do. The government won't do nothing unless 250 million go to Washington, D.C. at the same time and complain about how things are going down in America today. You got to do what you can on what you have. No one or nobody (that includes illegals) can make you work that $5.15/hr job. If you think that is the only thing you can do or have, you ain't looking hard enough.

You have worded your question in such way that all problems belong to the illegal aliens and the government.... but...

No, you can't live on the minimum wage. For that, could perhaps live with your parents or share an apartment at best. Some of us don't want to live in such conditions so we plan our educations, learn new skills, and work two jobs.

What you are saying, if you are to word in different way, is that you feel you have the right to have a decent living without any effort of your own. Many of us started with minimum wage, working two jobs AND having to go to school and study at night.

I don't know if you see it or even want to admit it, but with so many possibilities in this country, why would you feel you are limited to working for minimum wage for long? - that is, if you are willing to use it as a stepping stone and excel from there.

Uh, I don't really understand the question exactly, it is all over the place.

Could I live on 5.15/hr ? Uh -- NO! But, the minimum wage is about to raised! President Bush signed a bill recently to up the minimum wage by $2.10

It goes in three steps:

$5.85 - Summer of 2007
$6.55 - Summer of 2008
$7.25 - Summer of 2009

minimum wage was established for those workers who lack basic job skills. No employer can retain trained workers at 5.15 per hour therefore we increase their level of compensation as they learn skills and become more productive.wages are driven by our free market economy, not the government.if workers are living in a depressed wage location, they have the right to relocate to a higher wage area or re-train for more skills. It is not and never has been the roll on our government to dictate what wages are appropriate for what jobs, they only establish a minimum standard. Those who rely on minimum wage increases to better themselves lack the fortitude required to take the steps to make their own life better.like it or not we live in a free market economy where those with marketable skills excel and those who lack skills and do not put forth the effort required for self improvement are left at the bottom of the economy.Economics 101 dear.

hey grace,

why don't the people earning $5.15 stop being lazy and either further themselves away from the min. wage or work harder and get a promotion. it's not the government's job to take money from hard working people like myself and give it to people that can't forge their own path in life.

and guess what? if you pay every min. wage earner more money than businesses won't be able to employ as many people. so you are left with more unemployment. simple solution: stop feeling sorry for the people that have slacked off their whole life and now are forced to b-tch and moan about getting paid $5.15/hr.

I don't think you can enter rent an apartment on that income. That is even less, than minimum wage, it should at least be $7.50, an hour. Is someone getting cheated here?

The minimum wage varies per state. Ours is considerably higher than $5.15per hour. You have to write your congressman to support raising min. wage in your own state.
