I have a 2004 Ford Taurus and while I was on long distance drive the "check transmission" indicator came on. I checked the tranny fluid level and it was find.
The weird thing about it is that it went away when I restarted the engine, but came on again after some miles.
Also, ever since this problem occured I've been hearing somekind of noise ( ratttling\static) underneath the engine especially when I first start it in the morning, and the engine sometimes idle high. On a another occasion, the car couldn't go fast on reverse even when I press the gas pedal almost all the way.

I'm thinking it might be a electrical problem but not sure.

Would a engine diagnostic be able to tell me what's wrong with the car?

Thanks!!!!

Check out your fluid level. Refill the mobil or the engine oil.

If the car starts nicely there cannot be any electrical problem.

You have also said that the car gives a rattling sound. That happens when the sensitive rotating and revolving parts of the engine do not get adequate engine oil.

Immediately refill the engine with engine oil.

The tank may have run dry. The indicator is giving you the hint. Since it disappears the moment you start the engine but reappears after the engine veers to life!

Get the computer scanned for codes. Even if the light is not on at the time, there will still be a code in memory. It may be a fluid pressure related issue, but the line pressure is controlled by solenoids and the computer. Thus a bad solenoid could cause all this.

Did you check your transmission with the engine running? Automatic transmission need to have their oil checked with the engine running and transmission fluid warm.

Unfortunately Reverse is usually the first gear to go.

You might want to try getting the transmission flushed and replaced with new fluid.

Yes, you should have your computer scanned. It will tell you what the problem is. It sounds like you might have a weak pump; problems in reverse are almost always the first sign.

You need to get it in and have the transmission looked at. Putting it off, will only cause more things to go wrong and cost you more. do it now. good luck.
