Sometimes when I read what people write about us I think they haven't a clue.

People who have made a personal commitment to Jesus Christ that is still important in their life today and who also believe that when they die they will go to Heaven because they have confessed their sins and had accepted Jesus Christ as their savior.

“Evangelicals" meet the born again criteria plus seven other conditions. Those include saying their faith is very important in their life today; believing they have a personal responsibility to share their religious beliefs about Christ with non-Christians; believing that Satan exists; believing that eternal salvation is possible only through grace, not works; believing that Jesus Christ lived a sinless life on earth; asserting that the Bible is accurate in all that it teaches; and describing God as the all-knowing, all-powerful, perfect deity who created the universe and still rules it today.

do you want to know what i see today christian as-the christians today not christians they walk away from the holly teaching and turn to evil. A woman date a guy should not have sex until marriage but now days a christian girl is living with her boyfriends for many years,

If you want to know what a true christian is-a completely follow of the bible, one who does nothing evil or bad or doing anything that has the appearance of evil. They talk to God every day and do things to help others making their life alittle better. They show love, kindness, goodness, meekness, They turn the other check. They believe in the family. They honor their fathers even if their fathers left them when they were small. They hold no ill will toward any one or anything. They follow men's law and follow God's laws. they keep the sunday or saturday holy( which one is given to them as a day set aside to worship God). They donot kock down others because of what they believe and they pray for those who donot believe the bible. They have a smile and contentment on their faces that shows from their heart and from the light of God.
They donot fight or cause a sight, nor do they gossip or backbite against people. They honor those in authority and pray for them. They give to ceasor what is ceasors which means they do all the laws ,rules and orders that are place on them by those who ruler over them. They give God the glory and praise for everything that comes their way weither it is good food or good friends or pain and saddness. They read the bibe from cover to cover and follow the spirit that pulls them and shows them the true way.

A lot of good answers here, most of them are very objective. I'm quite proud of us for leaving out personal opinions!

I'll stick with the people who say a Christian is someone who believes that Jesus Christ was the Messiah, and add that they are monotheistic, hold to the truth of the Bible, and believe that one much see the Bible as true in order to obtain eternal life.

Good answers, all. Clearly the definition is elusive even among those who claim to be Christians.

The consensus seems to be that Christian are the followers of Christ. And that's a great place to begin your search.

Everything else is like the exclusionary fine print that says, "but...."

A follower of Jesus the Christ.

One who has laid down life on his own terms, has been convinced of his hoplessness apart from mercy of God... and .further has been enlightened, by grace through faith in the substitutionary sacrifice of Jesus Christ for the remission of all sin and has responded to God,accordingly..... believes in the Virgin Birth of Jesus Christ (God incarnate)and His bodily resurrection from the dead. Finally, that Jesus Christ himself, is God.

Belief alone is not enough...the demons also believe and tremble.
Works can not save....they are a natural progression and are indicative of saving faith.
Belief, confession, repentance and action are all integral parts of the salvation process... The Blood of Jesus Christ is the covering for all unrighteouness.....The Christian is a new person(born again) and then begins a walk in daily sanctification.

First of all, thank you so much for an honest question. They're few & far between on Yahoo! Answers.

My response would be: a Christian is a follower of the teachings of Jesus Christ portrayed in the Bible.

I think if you believe in Jesus Christ, accept him as the Savior, and keep his commandments and strive to be like him...that's what a Christian is, to me. But everyone has different definitions. Sometimes those definitions are meant to exclude others.

One who believes that Jesus Christ is God's Son; that is to mean God in the flesh, who provided the ultimate sacrifice for the sins of the whole world and rose from His grave as proof that all who put their faith in Him shall likewise be resurrected and spend eternity never again separated from our Heavenly Father, the creator of all things.

As an atheist, this is my definition of a Christian:

Someone who believe in Jesus Christ in a divine capacity.

Sweet and simple. Not adding fire to the Catholic vs. Protestant bickering. Open enough to include non-denominational Christians who have non-traditional views.

Someone who believes Jesus was the son of god and died for their sins. That's "Christian" to me. Beyond that, the definition can be several various beliefs.
