My GGF came here from Bavaria sometime between his birth in 1824 and the 1880 Census. I will NOT fly but am very curious about where my family came from.
Thanks in advance for any help.

The reason I would like to know is because I am not a traveller (even within the U.S.) but I love knowing facts about areas. I know the size of my home state (PA) and have been to each corner of it. It's pretty dang big! I don't know why it's hard to understand why I want to know this. I like to imagine what my ancestors did in their time. Especially the ones that served in the Revolutionary War and Civil War. The hardships they had. The miles they had to walk. I could go on. I realize most people don't even think about the ones that came before them. I feel my life is no more important than theirs.

And, I have looked in many areas for him. I'm not new to Genealogy but he is my brick wall. George Kirstner born 1824.

O.K. Well, Germany is about the size of Oregon. Bavaria is in the south part of Germany (called Bayern by the Germans). You can try Martin Geneaology and other such books, available at the library; you may need an inter-library loan.
The dates are too late for Germanna, VA (1714) or Germantown (PA). Depending upon what info you have, try ship's passenger lists. In Germany, civil records were NOT required until the later half of the 1800's (Germany wasn't even a country until then), so you will need church (kirche) records.
Try the genealogy societies of the State he came to, or even the county/city genealogy society.
Try Heritage Books, www.HeritageBooks.com.

If you're curious about where your family came from, then you should look up what that area is like, and I'm not quite sure that knowing the size of a U.S. state that's equal in size to Bavaria will help with that. That said, Bavaria is about the size of West Virginia.

I've no idea of the point of asking state size. You can look up your ancestors' immigration. Another way to get some info try to maybe find him here, but keep checking back, they're still loading data. http://castlegarden.org/
