I'd like to send some movie clips by email but they are very big files - I'm looking for a good program to compress them?

mpeg files are already compressed, RAR, ZIP won't do nothing. What you have to do is re-encode your video. Your mpegs will lose little detail and size will be much smaller. For even smaller sizes, you can lower bitrate, crop, or resize.

Microsoft has a free Media Encoder, it only produces Windows Media files (asf/wmv).

I use the free VirtualDub. It doesn't work with .wmv, won't write mpeg2. You'll also need codecs, download the .xvid codec, or try the klite codec pack. For the ones receiving your video files, for playback I recommend them installing Xvid, or the Combined Community Codec Pack.

Winzip.
Or if you are trying to record a large file then Popcorn will automaticly compress a Video file to fit a standard 4.7gb disc.

Winzip will compress them a little, go to download.com and download free evaluation copy, which should get you through what you need for free.
