Can be from any type of racing - Nascar, F1, Indy - whatever -
I personally think it would be Mario Andretti - he won at Indy, won the Daytona 500, and won a F1 championship too.

Gotta go with Mario.

Indy, Daytona, World Driving Championship, Championshio of Makes (LeMans types), USAC Dirt track, IRL.

He's done it all, and the only other drivers that even come close to his expertise and versatility might be Graham Hill or Jim Clark.

#1 Mario Andretti
#2 Dan Gurney
# A.J. foyte

all three of these drivers have won in multiple fields

including f1 as a driver in Mario's case as an owner/constructor in gurney's case

le mans over all wins

Indy 500 aw sell as Indy car championships

iroc championships

Dayton 500 wins

and countless dirt track wins

when i challenged schumachers status as greatest driver vs greatest grand prix driver the best argument i was given was that he finishes 5th at le mans in a souber, and im sorry 5th out of 10 cars in a class isn't great, its good but it isn't great
should he choose to drive in other series in different makes i'll give him the credit hes due but till them hes just the best grand prix driver ever

David Pearson would be my pick. Although Richard Petty Has more wins overall, I believe that Pearson was the better driver. Had he competed back in the dirt track days of NASCAR, I think that he could have equaled "King Richard's" total.

Ricky Bobby!!

Haha but with all seriousness, Dan Gurney. The guy is a true racer. He builds his own AMERICAN chassic, brings it to Europe and wins in Germany. Then he challenges all the F1 guys to a one-lap shootout and they turn him down. Now that's intimidation without wrecking someone!

And if I couldn't go with Gurney I'd choose AJ Foyt.

if you ask any drivers including jeff gordon they will all tell you tony stewart is the best driver today, hes won championships in anything he drives. but in his time 200 wins and 7 championships by richard petty is hard to beat. the 7 championships may be broken one day but the 200 wins will never be broke

It depends on the time period you are referring to, to name a few, Fangio,Stirling Moss , Jackie Stewart. The list goes on and they were all F1 drivers.
