I have to run 1/2 mile in 6 minutes in 6 days. I can only make it around the track 1 time and that's pushing it. I am in decent shape but haven't excercised in years. It gets hard to breathe when I run. Any advice that could help me?

For all of you "negative" people, what I mean by decent shape is that I am 5'5", 115lbs. & mother of 3. Taking care of 3 kids is not an easy task and keeps me active. If you can't post anything nice, then don't post at all.

Start slowly and work yourself back into shape, this is all about aerobic exercise and doing your health some good. Over exertions will do more harm than good.

Do you smoke? Do you have asthma? Maybe you need an inhaler. I can understand being tired but you shouldn't be out of breathe unless you are running too hard. You only have to run at a moderate speed to do 1/2mile in 6mins.
Be sure you are hydrated. Take your time, pace yourself and do not start off too fast. STRECH--especially after your workout.Control your breathing while you run. Don't just huff and puff endlessly. Actually concentrate on controlling each breathe in and each breathe out--even while you stretch, warm up and warm down.
Run 1 full mile EVERYday even if you have to run very slow or walk. Work past the tiredness and your body will kick into a state of euphoria where you will feel like you can run forever.
REST on the 5th day. By the 6th day, you should have no problem running 1/2 mile in 6mins.

The only way to build stamina is to keep running long distances as much as possible. But if you can push yourself to do a lap, you could probably walk the other lap and still make your 6 minute cap.
Breathing: Just take a breath at regular intervals, I breathe every four steps (Two on each foot). If you breathe irregularly, you will get cramps

6 days is more than enough time to get fit..
just run
run run run..
jog as much as your body can take.. youll be sore for the first 2 days or so.. but by time you have to actually do it..
i bet you do it in around 3 minutes.. 1/2 miles is nothing..
i just hiked 24 miles in a day and a half.. all of it uphill cept the last 5 miles.. and that was straight down..
im a chain smoker and a stoner and i hadnt worked out since last summer...
if i can do that.. you can jog half a mile

You can do it. I used to run 12's in like 6th grade but I worked on it and delt with pain and fatigue. The first couple of times you run, you should take it easy and try not to go for your goal. Get yourself actually running 2 laps before you run it faster. Since 6th grade I have become one of the four 4 minute milers that have ever ran at my middle school. Its a pretty good goal for yourself. Just take your time to practice and your set.

You have to pace yourself during this race.Make sure you bring a stop watch with you.You have to run 1:30 for every 200 split(half a lap= 200 meters). You can't start out to fast. Go down to track and run one of two at that pace. Don't kill yourself because you have to run it 6 days. The day of the race make sure your well hydrated, rested and eat a healthy meal about 3 hours before. Good Luck

Breathe with a rhythm. It'll go: Left (breathe in) Right, Left (breathe out) right, Left (breathe in) etc etc. Works for me, Im a Marine, and have trained with many a fatbody's. Breathing is the key! Once you get that down, the mental will come right along with it! Hope this helps and good luck!! the worst that could happen is you lose a pound or two and build muscle ;)

As a runner I strongly recommend:
www.runnersworld.com
Has GREAT training plans, articles, stretching ideas, fitness tips, race tips, and anything you can think of. I love the magazine. They also have ways to motivate yourself and love running.
And:
www.running2win.com
Will help you track how much you run so you can see your improvements! Even if it's just for six days.
You can customize your training plan for a mile, but not a half mile, however I think the mile plan is very beneficial. You tell them your goals (Runnersworld.com), they give you a great plan!
Good luck [:

When you get a chance go out and jog for 30 minutes. If you need a break take a break in the middle of it but keep walking in your break. Good luck with your run!
