The American pronunciation and spelling is every bit as legitimate as the English. In fact, more and more people are speaking American English. Believe it. People that get on here and knock Americans are, how you say, nutsacks.

I'm not sure who the judge would be in this case. My English friends are quite entertained by how Americans pronounce certain words - and chuckles happen the other way around also. Neither has a case for criticizing the other. Languages are organic and not "owned" by their country of origin. In any case, all you have to do is compare current estuary English with the version from the 40s to see that even the "Queen's English" has changed. (Even Lizzie's own speech has changed in the last 60 years.)

I'm American and I can say that we have slaughtered the mother tounge. However in our defense.... when we moved over here to the New World, we had a proper way of speaking and over the years and miles of land between familys and towns... we got inventive! How about some of the 'hillbilly' accents? "hi ya'll!" some of these conjure up images of very ignorant folk, and the truth be known... these are some of the most clever and wise of us! A country boy will survive is really true.

Here's one for your collection. Why does Basil have a Y in it when pronounced by Americans? Bay-sil instead of Bas-il.
On the UK forum there's a similar discussion on the go: http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Aun0q7xdamkwusEX61KBvDYgBgx.?qid=20070627174100AAmdjAy&show=7#profile-info-f0da4a517ba6c6b58130dd41efd9fb9faa

You can't pronounce football properly, you say soccer. Why is this? football is a very easy word to say.

Rather! I mean, dash it all and blimey! and heres us simple Americans thinking we have it right! I meant how do you get an "F" in Lieutenant? How is Worcester Wooster? and how the bloody devil do you say Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch? I am sure we should be excused for mucking that one up.
